This up and coming region is situated in central Portugal. It became a DOC in 1999 and was then divided into three subregions:
*Castelo Rodrigo
*Cova de Beira (home of the exclusive local white grape Fonte Cal)
The climate is continental, with hot and dry summers and very cold winters. These conditions can be tricky, creating grapes with higher alcohol to tannin ratios, but with skill, great wines can still be produced.
Whites produced in the region are Arinto, Rabo de Ovelha, Malvasia Fina and Siria. Reds grapes are Tinto Roriz, Touriga Nacional, Rufete, Bastardo and Marufo. The area is known for older vines, with small yields, but fine structure.

  • Quinta Do Encontro Q Do E Bical 2012

Dusty, sandy and pithy on the nose with decidedly chalky overtones to the estery white peach fruit. While very light in the mouth this is really very fruity in a very light super fresh style that shows off clean, crisp pithy green fruit leading to a modest finish. Perhaps a bit of a small wine but very refreshing. 85pts Read More

  • Quinta Dos Carvalhais Encruzado Dão 2011

Oaky, nutty, cool climate Chardonnay like nose is buttery and smoke filled and very influenced by wood. On the palate this shows rich flavors of  caramel and melon in a  lean, crisp and focused style that is a little rustic on the finish. Snappy, sapid and focused. 87pts Read More

  • Encruzado Barrique Do Portugal Quinta Dos Roques Encruzado Jahrgang Portugal Encruzado Die Dynamischen 2009

These Dao wines have progressed in leaps and bounds and show little in common with their ancestors of a couple of decades ago. This Quinta dos Roques is a case in point; the balance, elegance and hedonic pleasures of nose and mouthfeel is a far cry from the rusticity of the past. The Christmas Cake (what else?) scent, cherry pie flavours with m... Read More

  • Cabriz Colheita Seleccionada Tinto Dão DOC 2008

Oaky in a nutty, sweet caramel, Cognac kind of way, but there's plenty of herb-scented wild berry and blueberry fruit to handle it. Licorice and cedar, too. This is broad and fairly taut on entry, showing a fine balance of tightly grained tannins and acidity. There's a lot going on in the mouth with complex flavors of nutty oak, sweet caramel, v... Vintage rating : 96TPredicted year : 2015 (Ready to drink now, but will gain 6 to 7 years after vintage. - Le Tire Bouchon Griffin 2012.)Superb wine and value. It has a intense cherry/ruby colour. Speaking of cherries, we have definite intense aromas of that fruit and of prunes. In the mouth, the red fruits definitely kick in to gear with slight...
