This up and coming region is situated in central Portugal. It became a DOC in 1999 and was then divided into three subregions:

*Castelo Rodrigo
*Cova de Beira (home of the exclusive local white grape Fonte Cal)
*Pinhel

The climate is continental, with hot and dry summers and very cold winters. These conditions can be tricky, creating grapes with higher alcohol to tannin ratios, but with skill, great wines can still be produced.

Whites produced in the region are Arinto, Rabo de Ovelha, Malvasia Fina and Siria. Reds grapes are Tinto Roriz, Touriga Nacional, Rufete, Bastardo and Marufo. The area is known for older vines, with small yields, but fine structure.

  • Grao Vasco Dao Branco 2012

    Snoothrank:

Crystal clear pale yellow color. Very aromatic nose--tropical fruits. Very dry and crisp on the palate. Only slight hints of the tropical fruit flavors. I am not that experienced with Portuguese wines. Most of my experience is with Vinho Verde, and this wine is very similar--light, dry, crisp. US$8.09 at Total Wine. Read More

  • Casa de Santar Tinto 2010

    Snoothrank:

A blend of Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, Tinta Roriz Lovely spicy baking spices over briary blueberry fruit greets the nose here joined by some slightly inky fruit aromas topped with some smoky, burnt sugar notes. The oak on the nose may not be overpowering but this is some very perfumed wood. High acid on entry, and showing some very soft, fi... Read More

20.00 Bright on entry and with great fruit early on the medium bodied palate, this shows excellent depth of fruit, superb focus and good tension in the mouth. theres a wave of late arriving complexity, savory and aromatic in the mouth that leads to a long, complex finish. This has excellent potential to improve in the cellar. A bit of a revelat... Read More

  • Quinta Do Encontro Q Do E Bical 2012

    Snoothrank:

Dusty, sandy and pithy on the nose with decidedly chalky overtones to the estery white peach fruit. While very light in the mouth this is really very fruity in a very light super fresh style that shows off clean, crisp pithy green fruit leading to a modest finish. Perhaps a bit of a small wine but very refreshing. 85pts Read More
