for this region?

This up and coming region is situated in central Portugal. It became a DOC in 1999 and was then divided into three subregions:

*Castelo Rodrigo
*Cova de Beira (home of the exclusive local white grape Fonte Cal)
*Pinhel

The climate is continental, with hot and dry summers and very cold winters. These conditions can be tricky, creating grapes with higher alcohol to tannin ratios, but with skill, great wines can still be produced.

Whites produced in the region are Arinto, Rabo de Ovelha, Malvasia Fina and Siria. Reds grapes are Tinto Roriz, Touriga Nacional, Rufete, Bastardo and Marufo. The area is known for older vines, with small yields, but fine structure.

  • Quinta Dos Roques Red Blend Dão 2009

    Snoothrank:

These Dao wines have progressed in leaps and bounds and show little in common with their ancestors of a couple of decades ago. This Quinta dos Roques is a case in point; the balance, elegance and hedonic pleasures of nose and mouthfeel is a far cry from the rusticity of the past. The Christmas Cake (what else?) scent, cherry pie flavours with m... Read More

  • Cabriz Colheita Seleccionada Tinto Dão DOC 2008

    Snoothrank:

Oaky in a nutty, sweet caramel, Cognac kind of way, but there's plenty of herb-scented wild berry and blueberry fruit to handle it. Licorice and cedar, too. This is broad and fairly taut on entry, showing a fine balance of tightly grained tannins and acidity. There's a lot going on in the mouth with complex flavors of nutty oak, sweet caramel, v... • Quinta Dos Roques Qunita Do Correio Dao Tinto 2009

    Snoothrank:

I have not had Dao wine for some time, and this mid-rank number from Quinta do Correio has bracing acidity on the palate with flavours of cranberry and wild red huckleberry. Soft and approachable, the wine is good value. There is also a smooth creamy finish that should appeal to a broad cross-section of wine drinkers. Try it. Read More

  • Quinta Do Corujão Colheita 2003

    Snoothrank:

Tremendously bright and fruity, full of blackberry and cherry, with a hint of black pepper and just enough dryness to keep things from becoming cloying. Long, lingering flavor that doesn't so much evolve as maintain its integrity the whole while. Despite being upfront and straightforward, it does so directly enough to be a great little wine for ...
