This up and coming region is situated in central Portugal. It became a DOC in 1999 and was then divided into three subregions:

*Castelo Rodrigo
*Cova de Beira (home of the exclusive local white grape Fonte Cal)
*Pinhel

The climate is continental, with hot and dry summers and very cold winters. These conditions can be tricky, creating grapes with higher alcohol to tannin ratios, but with skill, great wines can still be produced.

Whites produced in the region are Arinto, Rabo de Ovelha, Malvasia Fina and Siria. Reds grapes are Tinto Roriz, Touriga Nacional, Rufete, Bastardo and Marufo. The area is known for older vines, with small yields, but fine structure.

  • Julia Kemper Dão Elpenor 2010

    Snoothrank:

Nice, bright, fresh red from Portugal. This is a blend of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Alfrocheiro and Jaen. The nose is a bit syrah like, black cherry and a touch of smoke. In the mouth there are flavors of macerated black cherry, some green plum, a touch of leather, fine grained tannins, nice acidity and a medium long finish. Excellent QPR... Read More

  • Quinta de Foz de Arouce Vinho Regional Beira Atlantico Tinto 2011

    Snoothrank:

Earthy, mushroomy nose. Quite a light-bodied red wine. Some dried red fruit flavors on the tip of the tongue, but they are fairly sedate. No tannin to speak of. Also light on acid. An uncomplicated, easy to drink wine that will offend nobody, but it wont thrill you, either. Read More

  • Grao Vasco Dao 2010

    Snoothrank:

Imported by: Evaton Inc. Ct. A blend of unspecified percentages of Jaen, Tinto Roriz, Touriga Nacional Bright, floral and simple on the nose though with nice depth to the vinous orange rind and white floral aromas. Smooth on entry, a bit lean but with a touch of flesh sticking to the the taut acid driven and dusty tannin laced structure. the fru... Read More

Portuguese Reds...hard to find in my portion of the woods, but worth the hunt. Just an incredible bargain versus US reds, then again, very few imported wines fail to fill that bill. Read More
