Martinborough is a small town and wine region within the Wairarapa district of New Zealand’s North Island. It’s located a small distance from the capital city of Wellington, and noted for its premium boutique wineries.

The region benefits from free-draining alluvial soils, long sunny days, cool nights and minimal rainfall, which create the perfect conditions for well balanced, character-driven grapes. Pinot Noir is the standout varietal, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer also grown.

  • Margrain Pinot Noir Martinborough Home Block 2009

    Snoothrank:

Pretty perfumes, earthy, lightly smoky, floral, rhubarb, strawberry and raspberry, a little wood, a touch blocky in the mouth but light and lively, really attractive freshness here with an edge of sage and spice topping the vivid raspberry fruit, very Oregon styled, rose pets in the mouth, plummy finish, vibrant and zesty, impressive fruit density Read More

    Snoothrank:

Intense and heavy on the nose. Firmly oaky, plummy, tobacco smoke, blackberry fruit, super savory dried herb stem notes, rich and very powerful but with impressive cut, there's really bright acid here, a deep core of savory fruit, super savory and layered with dried herb tones, a touch of salted plum, vanilla and incipient game notes, too big fo... • Cobblestone Pinot Noir Martinborough Te Muna 2009

    Snoothrank:

This wine is intriguing because of its seeming tendency to blend the lines of New World and Burgundy, Delicacy and Boldness, Elegance and Power. This wine has a big core of red plum and cherries but it also shows delicate forest floor and flowers. Its full bodied yet never felt heavy, in fact just the opposite. The wine's balance seems so pre... Read More

  • Ata Rangi Chardonnay Martinborough Craighall 2009

    Snoothrank:

Wild yeast and old barrel nose with a bit of almond and rich, toasty aromas layered over smoky, earthy dried orchard fruits. This is rich and powerful in the mouth but remains fresh with a fine acid backbone. The flavors are decidedly old school. The fruit is rather delicate here, playing second fiddle to the fairly prominent oak notes which are... Read More
