Wairarapa is a cool-climate wine region in the southernmost tip of North Island, New Zealand. Several rivers run through it, enriching its soils and providing excellent natural sources of irrigation. Long days of sun exposure with cool breezes contribute to a lengthy growing season and well-balanced, character-driven grapes.

Pinot Noir is the prominent grape in this maritime climate, especially so in the famous subregion of Martinborough. Other varietals cultivated in Wairarapa are Chardonnay, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc.

  • Cobblestone Pinot Noir Martinborough Te Muna 2009

    Snoothrank:

This wine is intriguing because of its seeming tendency to blend the lines of New World and Burgundy, Delicacy and Boldness, Elegance and Power. This wine has a big core of red plum and cherries but it also shows delicate forest floor and flowers. Its full bodied yet never felt heavy, in fact just the opposite. The wine's balance seems so pre... Read More

  • Ata Rangi Chardonnay Martinborough Craighall 2009

    Snoothrank:

Wild yeast and old barrel nose with a bit of almond and rich, toasty aromas layered over smoky, earthy dried orchard fruits. This is rich and powerful in the mouth but remains fresh with a fine acid backbone. The flavors are decidedly old school. The fruit is rather delicate here, playing second fiddle to the fairly prominent oak notes which are... Read More
