Marlborough Wine

While wines from Marlborough, in New Zealand’s South Island, have only come into prominence recently, there is actually a wine-making history in that region that dates back to the 1870s. Meadowbank Farm Manager David Herd planted Muscatel in a parcel of land in the Fairhall/Brancott area that became very well regarded. Though he died in 1905, his vineyard continued to produce until the 1930s. A few other small wineries also began to crop up during the late 1800s into the early part of the 20th century.

But it wasn't until 1973, when Frank Yukich of Auckland’s Montana Wines selected Marlborough for its expansion efforts. He saw the potential of this region, with sunny days and cool nights that ensure a long growing season and well balanced grapes. The success of his endeavors prompted other wineries to follow, many of them international enterprises. One of the most notable of these is Australia’s Cape Mentelle, who established the widely successful Cloudy Bay Read more »

  • Sileni Estates Sauvignon Blanc Cellar Selection North Island 2014

    Snoothrank:

2nd time around and still liking it a bunch. One notable change - the grapefruit, though prominent, has lessened some and it allowed the other lemongrass and citrus notes to shine a little brighter. The honeysuckle and orchard florals are very good. Drink now - Paul 88 points Read More

  • Stoneleigh Latitude Pinot Noir 2012

    Snoothrank:

Another one had at Lunch yesterday at Marcello's Chophouse. Opens with Musk and Stewed Black Fruit, and Earthiness. Tart, somewhat acidic, and medium to highly tannic, but pleasantly so. As it opens, it smooths out and delivers more and more stewed fruits, some chocolate/cocoa, and earth. I prefer this style much more than the more fruit forward... Read More

  • Soho Marlborough Pinot Noir White Collection 2011

    Snoothrank:

Any good pinot is better 5 years later so the saying goes...and this example proves it. It was was very timid at first, but with time the fruit emerged and brought with it a great spice fruit. Red berry fruit - mostly cherries and raspberry - leads the way with crisp acidity and slightly chewy tannins lead to a mouthwatering finish. Drink now - ... Read More

  • Fire Road Sauvignon Blanc 2014

    Snoothrank:

Binny's 3/2016. New Zealand does not export an average bottle of wine at any price point. Always better than you paid for, if California wine is your basis point. Well, maybe not the high end, as $20/$30 per 750 ml bottle is my price limit. Read More

  • Allan Scott Pinot Noir 2013

    Snoothrank:

Binny's 3/2016. Served with London Broil with the Gilmore's to kick off "summer", or in this case a very warm spring day. Just a delightful bottle made even more memorable because we followed it up with a typical bottle of California's over priced attempt at a red blend. Read More
