Marlborough Wine

While wines from Marlborough, in New Zealand’s South Island, have only come into prominence recently, there is actually a wine-making history in that region that dates back to the 1870s. Meadowbank Farm Manager David Herd planted Muscatel in a parcel of land in the Fairhall/Brancott area that became very well regarded. Though he died in 1905, his vineyard continued to produce until the 1930s. A few other small wineries also began to crop up during the late 1800s into the early part of the 20th century.

But it wasn't until 1973, when Frank Yukich of Auckland’s Montana Wines selected Marlborough for its expansion efforts. He saw the potential of this region, with sunny days and cool nights that ensure a long growing season and well balanced grapes. The success of his endeavors prompted other wineries to follow, many of them international enterprises. One of the most notable of these is Australia’s Cape Mentelle, who established the widely successful Cloudy Bay Read more »

  • Ara Single Estate Pinot Noir Marlborough New Zealand Wine 2012

    Snoothrank:

Purchased at Binny's, 12/2016. This is Randy constantly trying to get our friend, Joyce, away from Macmurray's California Pinot Noir, her go to fav. I did not succeed, but this was very good. Maybe, no not maybe, not even close to some of the best NZ has to offer, but certainly gulpable. Read More

  • Spy Valley Pinot Noir Marlborough 2013

    Snoothrank:

Cranberry juice with rootbeer brown hues in color....excellent clarity...looks like an above average Pinot Noir. Loads of cherry and dark assorted berries on the nose, along with smooth spiciness and mild mocha/chocolate. The flavors are of delicate berries, slight oak dryness and young Port qualities...alcohol is very gentle and overall the m... Read More

  • Babich Sauvignon Blanc 2015

    Snoothrank:

Mariano's, 8/2016, Mary bought. Babich eeks out a close win over Kim Crawford in the August 2016, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, tasting by Mary. I sipped each, and I agree. This was a very close decision, a wrong purchase decision between these two wines is not possible. Read More

  • Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc 2015

    Snoothrank:

Mariano's, 8/2016, Mary bought and Mary loved it. More than she, (not me) usually spends on white wine. Good to know she favors it, as this label is readily available almost everywhere. So, when I am aware enough (rarely, I admit), to bring home a treat for her I have this easy option. Read More
