The climate in the Netherlands, or Holland, is too cool and damp to produce quality wine. However the Dutch have been very active in the European wine market through the centuries, with their geographic location perfectly positioned as a prime merchant port for German and French wines. In addition, the Dutch have heavily influenced the production of South African wines. The Dutch settled there in the 17th century and established many wineries throughout the country, and also the Koöperatieve Wijnbouwers Vereniging van Zuid-Afrika Bpkt (KWV) in 1918. First developed as massive wine cooperative, this became the regulating force in the South African Wine industry.

But while wine is not a big Dutch export, the Netherlands is known for gin. Jenever (Genever in Belgium), the name derived from juniper, which is the main botanical ingredient, was first produced in the 16th century. Chemist Sylvius de Bouve is attributed as the first to distill malt wine and add juniper to mask Read more »

    Snoothrank:

I wasn't sure until after the first few sips. It's funny because your taste buds are prepared for the clarity of wine and that isn't the taste or texture. As you swallow, you feel the warmth of the alcohol, but the flavor of rich chocolate stays in your mouth. I love it. I don't drink Bailey's...I prefer O'Mara's. I drink it in coffee over ice. ... If you are truly looking for a wine this is not for you. If you want something rich, yummy, flavorful and sweet then this may just be for you! It is similar to a mudslide or Bailey's type drink. Very strong tasting, very thick and rich- but also very good! If you the idea of an alcoholic milkshake appeals to you then try it- you will like it! Read More

My husband and I tried Chocovine for the first time tonight. We wanted to like it... we really did. But this stuff tastes nothing like wine. It's like a mixed drink in a bottle. So if you like TGI Fridays stuff, this'll be perfect for you. But if you're shopping for wine, don't bother with Chocovine. (The smell and taste are so strong, my husban... Read More

I have tried the wine and it is good... but definitely must be chilled. I did add some to coffee and that was nice. Had the Raspberry, but can't find anything but the regular in Helena, Montana. Great for a special occasion or next to the fire with dessert. Read More

    Snoothrank:

Incredibly fake. Wine is an ingredient, but could we honestly call this drink, taken as a whole, wine? It aspires to be a wine-chocolate infusion. Yet it contains no actual chocolate. Yuck. The Dutch would be ashamed, so I am sorry they are mentioned on the bottle. Read More
