Moldovan Wine

The history of wine production in Moldova is at least 4000 years old, beginning with the ancient Dacians. Like many of its Baltic neighbors, production spread and improved throughout the Greek and Roman eras. During the 15th century rule of Stefan cel Mar (Stephen the Great), vines were sourced from other European countries and emphasized quality production.

From this point the Moldovan wine industry experienced several boom and bust periods. Starting in the early 16th century, vineyards were left to rot for 300 years during Ottoman rule and strict Muslim law prohibiting alcohol. In 1812, Bulgaria became part of the Russian empire and wine-making initiatives were put in place once again. The second part of the 19th century brought many French winemakers and vine imports, which is the reason so many vinifera varieties are available. The Phylloxera blight took its toll on Moldovan vineyards, but replanting initiatives were in full effect by the early 20th century. Then the World Read more »

Moldova on Snooth

  • Solaricco Fresco 2013

    Snoothrank:

This wine - from an old Soviet era winery in Moldova - is strikingly different; it has a nose of icing sugar, preserved lychee nut with (perhaps) a hint of pear. The entry is soft - almost empty of depth - with a kind of wild white berry flavour beneath a sea of distilled water. The finish is extremely short and light, but surprisingly perfect... Read More

  • Ok, I just opened the 2013 Et Cetera Cuvee Rouge (from Moldova), and it is quite tasty.  A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and two local grapes (Rara Neagra and Saperavi), it has soft tannins and a nice flavor.  I would buy this one again too, like their Et Cetera 'Serendipity' that we really loved.  Read More

  • Chocolato Chocolate Wine

    Snoothrank:

Giving new meaning to chocoholic, this milky cool concoction has a dessert wine kick even if you're not realizing it at first glass. Probably pairs best with a Valentine's Day treat or after a winter's comfort meal. I'm more of a dark chocolate fan and the wine-factor seems to get lost here, but more of a romantic gift. There is a sort of unu... Read More
