Macedonia Wine

The tradition of wine-making in the Macedonia region of Greece dates back thousands of years. Evidence of ancient grape seeds have been found during excavations, along with storing and drinking vessels. Although such things were forbidden in the Christian age of Byzantium, sacramental and table wines were still important to Greek culture. Crusaders brought back Macedonian wines to their respective countries, and brought Greek vines to plant at home, which is why so many varietals throughout Europe have Greek origins. The culture survived throughout the Ottoman empire, finding places where wine was still enjoyed despite Muslim restrictions. Macedonia on Snooth

  • Alpha Estate Axia Malagouzia Alpha Estate 2012

    Snoothrank:

Dried herb, white flowers, and perhaps a hint of vanilla all emerge slowly from the glass along with a touch of waxy, quince/passionfruit. Smooth and silky in the mouth, this has attractive if slightly simple flavors of unripe peach, kiwi and again a touch of quince all topped with gently woodsy floral notes. There's a nice combination of weight... Read More

  • Estate Gerovassiliou Malagousia Epanomi 2011

    Snoothrank:

Quite pungent on the nose with layers of floral, dried fruit, waxy spice, aniseed, violet and petrol aromas. Soft and delicate in the mouth with an early burst of meaty peach flavor followed by a round, soft and yet slightly juicy midpalate filled with creamy melon, mint, pea green and dried pear flavors that linger on the subtle if persistent f... • Boutari Naoussa Grande Reserve 2007

    Snoothrank:

A slight bramble berry and cough medicine nose with a creamy, smooth, soft, and mildly tannic entry, this Naoussa is ready for drinking. Some herbal bitters on the finish but well balanced otherwise. A very good wine for the price. Try with lamb souvlaki. 88 points. Read More

  • Thimiopoulos Xinomavro Uranos 2008

    Snoothrank:

100% Xinomauro. Aromas of cherry, blackberry, vanilla and light black olive notes. It's very similar to Nebbiolo. It's cherry dominant, medium bodied with dry, grippy tannins. It's got a dust quality and additional notes of blackberry and vanilla on the finish. Tasty wine!6/2/12 Read More
