Read moreThis has some assertive perfumes that combine notes of dried cherries, smoky, earthy tones and the spicy scent of new oak. In the mouth this is quite a structured wine with firm, slightly drying tannins and bright acidity supporting earthy dark cherry fruits. It's a touch rustic in one way yet with noticeable oak seems modern as well. In any event it's very young and can stand some time to soften those tannins but is enjoyable today for it bracing feel. Serve this with food, steak would be a good match. 87pts    (hide)

Have had more in Greece than anywhere else, since Japan imports less than even North America. I have had Retsina with many locals, though. When I first encountered it in the flesh (and not in classic texts), I was a bit shocked. Now I actually like it, find it goes well with several Greek dishes, and order it from time to time at the Greek restaurants I visit...    (hide)

  Popova Kula Macedonian Vranec 2005

  This is my first wine from Macedonia! Deep purple hue with a surprisingly crisp, light bodied taste. Crisp red fruit, strawberry and cherry. First thought was like a Zinfandel, but lighter. Pairs well with lamb - our server said "That's because they only eat lamb in Macedonia"
