Macedonia Wine

The tradition of wine-making in the Macedonia region of Greece dates back thousands of years. Evidence of ancient grape seeds have been found during excavations, along with storing and drinking vessels. Throughout early history, during the Greek and Roman empires, Macedonian wines have been carried and sometimes traded throughout Europe. There was much “worshipping” of the wine gods Dionysus in the Greek era and Bacchus during the Roman empire. Although such things were forbidden in the Christian age of Byzantium, sacramental and table wines were still important to Greek culture. Crusaders brought back Macedonian wines to their respective countries, and brought Greek vines to plant at home, which is why so many varietals throughout Europe have Greek origins. The culture survived throughout the Ottoman empire, finding places where wine was still enjoyed despite Muslim restrictions. But the Phylloxera blight in the late 1800s was a terrible blow to the Macedonian wine industry, along Read more »

Macedonia on Snooth

  • Tikves Bela Voda Macedonia 2011

    Snoothrank:

Interesting Macedonian red made from Vranec and Plavec grapes. Big blue and black fruits on the nose with a touch of smoke. Cooked black cherry, prune, a touch of tar, medium acidity, somewhat coarse tannins and a medium finish. This is fairly simple, lacking a mid palate and a bit rough on the edges. Read More

  • Tikve Vranec "Special Selection" 2011

    Snoothrank:

This is an interesting and different red from Macedonia. Chewy, grainy tannins go along with somewhat sour blueberry and cranberry tart. Fairly long finish and a medium of acidity. Will be interesting to see how the rest of the bottle tastes after a day or two of air. Read More

  • Tikve Rkaciteli "Special Selection" 2012

    Snoothrank:

Very interesting diversion with this excellent Macedonian Rkaciteli. Starts out like a laid back well made sauv blanc but then ends with some nice ripe peach and really nice acidity on the back end with a fairly lengthy finish. This is going to the top of my quality vs price list. Read More

  • Yea, Macedonia was always separate from Greece, never in the history has Macedonia been called Northern Greece until 1912. The sentence alone sounds funny in the description: Crusaders brought back Macedonian wines to their respective countries, and 'brought Greek vines to plant at home', which is why so many varietals throughout Europe have Gre...
