Soave is one of the best known white wine regions in Italy, located in the Veneto province just outside of Verona. This is a wine that has existed in some capacity in the area for centuries, though sadly, by the the 20th century, if there was a jug full of Italian white wine, chances are it was Soave.
But things have changed since then and quality control efforts have improved Soave production greatly. Soave was actually the first region to receive a DOC classification, in 1936. The principal grape is Garganega, which was then allowed to blended with Trebbiano Toscano (same as Ugni used for brandy) and Pinot Bianco, which produced a very thin, nearly flavorless wine. The restrictions have changed and those two grapes have been banned from the blend. It now consists of a minimum 70% Garganega, with an allowable maximum 30% Trebbiano di Soave (Verdicchio) and/or Chardonnay.
Most of the vineyards are located on the hillsides, around the Medieval town of Soave with Read more »

  • Pieropan Soave Classico 2014

Juicy aromas of pineapple and lemon with a bit of heat and spice. Medium-light bodied in the mouth, this is fairly simple but refreshing with notes of lemon and light melon, a hint of herb and a medium-short finish. This wine would pair excellently with a variety of delicate foods because it is unassuming and approachable while still having enou... Read More

  • La Fiera Soave 2012

Parmesan cheese and green apple aromas open for this inviting and interesting blend. Flavors are tart and refreshing, with lemon zest, melon and aged cheese rind. There's enough acidity to prop up the wine until the very end, where it falls off a bit. Not a wine for everyone but if you're a fan of a wine with cheese notes, this is truly delicious. Read More

  • "Pork = Pinot"Not with that sauce. Maybe some blowsy CA pinot, but ... it'll need body. Soave underweight. Gruner--shall we say they don't cook that dish natively in Austria? Always a good indicator. Read More
