Soave is one of the best known white wine regions in Italy, located in the Veneto province just outside of Verona. This is a wine that has existed in some capacity in the area for centuries, though sadly, by the the 20th century, if there was a jug full of Italian white wine, chances are it was Soave.

The principal grape is Garganega, which was then allowed to blended with Trebbiano Toscano (same as Ugni used for brandy) and Pinot Bianco, which produced a very thin, nearly flavorless wine. The restrictions have changed and those two grapes have been banned from the blend. It now consists of a minimum 70% Garganega, with an allowable maximum 30% Trebbiano di Soave (Verdicchio) and/or Chardonnay.

  • "Pork = Pinot"Not with that sauce. Maybe some blowsy CA pinot, but ... it'll need body. Soave underweight. Gruner--shall we say they don't cook that dish natively in Austria? Always a good indicator. Read More

  • Tedeschi Soave Classico Capitel Monte Tenda 2010

    Snoothrank:

Deeply aromatic on the nose with waxy base notes, lots of polleny accents and hints of peppery spice, incense, and dried peach fruits. Rich and slightly waxy on entry, this shows powerfully in the mouth with fine mouthgrab and a wonderfully well knit together texture. The flavors of peach and slightly honeyed citrus fruit are bright and vivid in... Read More

  • Started drinking Soaves at the beginning of the '80s. Around the time of those 'Rico Soave'  commercials Panos sends us to above. Easily damaged by shipping, when healthy so refreshing.Soaves had a relatively higher profile back then. The locals seem not to have kept up with the marketing bandwagon that other regions of Italy climbed onto. Read More
