Soave Classico Wine

Soave Classico are wines that are produced in a specific growing area within the Soave DOC in the Veneto, Italy. Like many of the other pillars of Italian wines such as Chianti, growing regions expanded and Classico zones were delineated to refer to both a DOC’s original (classic) viticultural area, and often its highest quality wines. The zone extends between the town of Soave and Monteforte d’Alpone.

Like the rest of Soave, Classicos are produced predominately from a minimum 70% Garganega grapes, with the rest Chardonnay and/or Trebbiano di Soave (Verdicchio). Trebbiano Toscano and Pinot Bianco, which were once allowable, have now been banned from the blend due to their inferior qualities.

The Soave Classico zone also produced Recioto di Soave Classico, the sweet version. But it does not include the spumante version.

  • Cantina di Monteforte Soave Classico Superiore DOCG 2007

    Snoothrank:

An instant almond rush on nose. In mouth, citrus fruit then distinctly floral right at the back of an extremely deep palate. Oak ageing gives a toasted nutty finish, ending with a refreshing touch of bitterness. Read More

  • Prá Soave 2008

    Snoothrank:

I matched the soave with my garden fresh tomato mozzarella basil salad, and my linguini and clam sauce. I thought it was perfect. With hints of citrus, and melon to the palate, and aromas of grass, and the seashore. 2008 Pra Soave put out a wonderful wine for the price. I paid $17.99 plus tax on Long Island NY. Read More

  • Leonildo Pieropan Soave Classico Superiore 2002

    Snoothrank:

I think this might have been just past the curve... but strangely enough worked well with risotto... it did have a few interesting qualities like aromas of Vinsanto/Moscata, melon, cantelope, apple compote with over-ripe fruits. The color was an amber yellow, a bit darker than it probably should be. Read More

  • I hosted a study of the Veneto for a group of wine lovers this week. It came off without a hitch and Im extremely happy with almost all of the wines. My idea was to use only ingredients that someone living in the Veneto would be able to find and so I let myself borrow some ingredients from Emilia-Romagna and Lombardy but the dishes are all ite...
