Piave is a wine region within the Veneto in northeast Italy. The river of the same name crosses through it diagonally, vineyards scattered throughout its valleys. Wines have been cultivated here for centuries, with written mentions dating as far back as the 16th century.
Raboso is the starring local indigenous red varietal, grown since ancient times, appearing in both blends and single varietal releases. Piave Malanotte is the prized DOCG comprising of at least 95% Raboso (a minimum 70% Raboso del Piave and up to 30% its clonal offshoot Raboso Veronese) with the remaining 5% other reds grown within the Piave zone, usually Carmenère. Under very strict regulations, the wine must consist of 15-30% dried Raboso grapes, creating a wine that is similar in flavor structure to Amarone of spicy cherries.
