Orvieto Classico is a white wine produced in a specific zone within the Orvieto region of Umbria in central Italy. The word “classico” refers to both the original growing area of the grapes and what is considered its highest quality viticultural source. Orvieto Classico centers around the town of Orvieto and extends to Lake Corbara and west to the border of Lazio.
Orvieto Classico is a dry wine, although the zone also encompasses its sweet version. The wines are a blend of at least 60% Procanico and Grechetto, with the remaining 40% containing Verdello, Malvasia Toscana, Canaiolo Blanco, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Blanc, Gewürztraminer and/or Sauvignon Blanc, as long as they are all sourced from within the classical growing area.
For more information on Orvieto history and production, please see Orvieto.

  • Melini Orvieto Classico 2010

Stony and dry smelling with some earthy notes, notes of pistachio and biter melon. Very light, fresh and crisp with an edge of sweetness buffering the acidity. Lightly flavored, easy and quaffable, with some mineral notes emerging on the back end along with a bit of limeade fruit. Finish is short and dry. 80pts Read More

  • Ruffino Orvieto Classico 2009

Totally an emotional response here. This wine reminds me so much of the floral and fruity blend that was on the tables when I lived so briefly in Umbria. Delicate, almost like a jasmine bouquet, surrounded by fresh cut grass and the zest of a blood orange. This vintage seems just as delightful as its predecessors. Read More

Clear pale color. Somewhat "sweet" bouquet. Initial sip is quite light--almost watery, then, farther in the palate, fruit -- table grapes -- emerges. Altough I definitely get a table grapes flavor, there is no sweetness. US$7.99 at Total Wines. Read More
