Umbria Wine

Umbria is a wine region tucked in central Italy, surrounded by Tuscany, Latium and the Marche. It’s a hilly area, with many of its 11 DOC’s beginning with ‘Colli,” Italian for slope or hill. The region is landlocked, and the first civilizations, the ancient Umbri and then the Etruscans, established their villages along the Tiber river as a hydration source. If you follow the legends of saints, one of the big ones, Francis of Assisi, for which the iconic town is named, was based here.

Umbria is best known for its white wines, particularly Orvieto, produced from the Trebbiano (here sometimes called Procanico) grape. This wine accounts for the majority of all the wine produced from the region. This is kind of a little black dress of a white wine, changing in style through the decades but always in fashion. Some trends dictate a young, fresh style, while others call for more sophisticated techniques in which the juice is left in contact with the skins for longer Read more »

Bright on entry and perhaps with just a hint of trapped CO2 helping to keep this lively in the mouth. the palate shows a similar array of savory character as the nose with more of a fruit profile, grapefruit peel, lime ... • Omero Moretti Terre di Giano 2011

    Snoothrank:

50% Sangiovese, 25% Ciliegiolo, 25% Merlot. Dark on the nose and slightly oaky with aromas of maduro tobacco, licorice and carob that drift up with spicy nuance to frame a tight core of black fruit and fresh leather. An initial rush of candied herbs flows across the palate pushed along by a wine of great power, and clarity. Theres excellent deta... Read More
