Vino Nobile de Montepulciano is a wine produced in or around the town of Montepulciano in Tuscany, Italy. It is understandably often confused with wines from Abruzzo and other parts of Italy produced from the Montepulciano grape that is not cultivated anywhere near the town. However, the Vino Nobile is produced from Sangiovese. From the town. A good general rule of thumb to avoid this confusion is if you see Montepulciano at the end of a wine name, it’s the place. In the beginning, that’s the grape.

That said, this Sangiovese wine is considered one of the finest in Tuscany. Evidence that wine was enjoyed in Montepulciano dates as far back as the Etruscan period, several centuries BC. An Etruscan chalice was discovered there in 1868, depicting Fluflun, the Etruscan god of wine, playing a drinking game with a maenad (female worshipper). In 1685, the wine became an international phenomenon after a poem written by Francesco Redi entitled “Bacco in Toscano” praised its attributes. In the poem, Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, praises the great wines of Tuscany and has special appreciation for Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. The wine became a favorite of King William III in England, probably due to the spread of the poem, and he continued to purchase it for the English court. In 1759, the French writer Voltaire also praised the wine in his work Candide.

However, as fads go, it fell out of favor in the 19th century and much of it was lumped together and sold under the Chianti label, instead of singling out its terroir and heritage to be sold by name. But in 1966, it received DOC status and in 1980, the prestigious DOCG classification.

To be labeled as Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, the fruit must be cultivated within its vineyard zone around the town of Montepulciano and produced with a minimum 60 - 80% Prugnolo Gentile (Sangiovese Grosso) and an allowable 10 - 20% Canaiolo. If produced around Siena, the grape Mammolo is also permitted in the blend. There is also a 10% allowable inclusion of aromatic white grapes such as the local Malvasia del Chianti.

The wine must be aged a minimum 18 months in large oak barrels (small barriques are not permitted as they impart too much of a vanillin flavor component), with at least 6 months in bottle before release. For a riserva, the wine must be aged a total of 36 months, with 6 in bottle. ~ Amanda Schuster
