Tuscany is a region with very distinguished titles in its DOC and DOCG repertoire. However, there are several wines that come from specific growing zones, but don’t conform to the regulations of their proprietary DOC, either because of the types of grapes in the blend, the age of the wines and/or the production techniques. Usually going under an IGT instead of a DOC allows a producer some freedom with experimentation in these areas.

The following are Tuscany’s IGTs:

*Alta Valle della Greve
*Colli della Toscana Centrale
*Maremma Toscana
*Toscano/Toscana
*Val di Magra

These styles can be produced as bianco, rosso, rosato, novello (young), frizzante (sparkling) or abboccato (semi-dry).  For more information on Tuscany’s history and regions, please visit Tuscany, Italy.

  • A ridiculous number of trigger pullworthies in this new offering, many in their absolute drinking prime. Wish the shop was just down the street from me, rather than the ones that are. But then I'd have to live in NYC.  ;-(I love it when a guy drops 100 cases on a shop, just to 'make some space" in his cellar. Wonder what's going to be filling th... Read More

  • A while back GDP had an article on low-dollar Sangioveses.  This was one ... that GDP article was a Toscana IGT called Casamatta.  I found that one for $8, and it was outstanding.  I spent a whole $11 for this one.I am still fighting the new computer HW/SW, and I am making progress.  This posting is part of my training.  In the first couple tr... • Tenuta Sette Ponti Supertuscan Blend Toscana IGT Crognolo 2010

    Snoothrank:

Intensely deep ruby red in color -- fruity, spicy bouquet -- (definite) black cherry and other berries on the palate. Another reviewer described it best by calling it "jammy." Letting it breathe eases the thickness of the flavors. It really opens up as it sets, though you can easily drink it as soon as you open it up. The price point was beyo... Read More
