Tuscany is a region with very distinguished titles in its DOC and DOCG repertoire. However, there are several wines that come from specific growing zones, but don’t conform to the regulations of their proprietary DOC, either because of the types of grapes in the blend, the age of the wines and/or the production techniques. Usually going under an IGT instead of a DOC allows a producer some freedom with experimentation in these areas.

The following are Tuscany’s IGTs:

*Alta Valle della Greve
*Colli della Toscana Centrale
*Maremma Toscana
*Toscano/Toscana
*Val di Magra

These styles can be produced as bianco, rosso, rosato, novello (young), frizzante (sparkling) or abboccato (semi-dry).  For more information on Tuscany’s history and regions, please visit Tuscany, Italy.

  • 'Super Tuscan' is a loose term used to denote wines that were purposely ... you're talking about the Toscana IGT or Bolgheri IGT, which are what are used to house Super Tuscans nowadays. Before the early '90s, when regulators rushed those through, Super Tuscans were generally just labeled 'table wines'.  Clear?!  ; Read More

  • Castiglion del Bosco Dainero Toscana IGT Tuscany Italy 2010

    Snoothrank:

Brown Ruby in the Glass, smelling of Chocolate and Licorice. Dry and Earthy then bright Cherry/Cinnamon/White Pepper. Interesting bit of Concrete Dust smell with light Smoke and Cedar. Description is inadequate, for this is a pretty good number. Probably still a bit young, but seems like when all is settled and edges blunted, will be even better. Read More

  • A ridiculous number of trigger pullworthies in this new offering, many in their absolute drinking prime. Wish the shop was just down the street from me, rather than the ones that are. But then I'd have to live in NYC.  ;-(I love it when a guy drops 100 cases on a shop, just to 'make some space" in his cellar. Wonder what's going to be filling th... Read More
