San Gimignano Wine

Vernaccia di San Gimignano is a Central Tuscan white, and was the first Italian wine to receive DOC recognition in 1966, doubtless in large part because during the Renaissance it was considered Italy's finest white wine, fit to fire the imaginations of poets, artists and Popes. Unfortunately, the 1966 wine bore little resemblance to its ancestor, and acquired a reputation of being light and spritzy. Since then there has been a great deal of effort to improve quality, and the best is now quite interesting: a golden-hued wine that both warms and inspires, with a rich, heady bouquet, and a crisp clean taste that lingers long on the palate. As Montenidoli's Elisabetta Fagiuoli observes, "it is really a red wine made from white grapes." In terms of accompaniments, Vernaccia will work nicely with flavorful fish, including crustaceans, white meats, and pecorino and other mild cheeses. In terms of reds, San Gimignano falls within the Chianti Colli Senesi zone, and is also home to the more recently established Read more »

  • Fontaleoni Vernaccia di San Gimignano 2013

    Snoothrank:

With simple apple fruit on the nose this doesnt reveal much aromatic complexity. On the palate its a vibrant wine, with bright acids supporting clean, crisp apple fruit that has some steely nuance to it. Clean and fresh, this is uncomplicated though has an attractive texture which is clean and easy to enjoy right through the modest finish. 84pts Read More
