Rosso di Montalcino is produced in the same defined zone as Brunello di Montalcino, around the town of the same name in Tuscany, Italy. The DOC was put in place in 1984 order to expedite production from younger vines and plantings, with less aging requirement than Brunello. Rosso only has to age 6 months in oak, while Brunello requires a minimum 2 years in oak, 4 years total. This gives wine-makers the ability to earn some cash as they wait for their higher prestige wines to mature. 
 
Like Brunello, Rosso must be produced from 100% Sangiovese Grosso. But it’s a fresher, lighter style, though still structured with Sangiovese characteristics.
