“Not even the beasts who abound/ In the wilds between Cecina and Corneto, and hate tilled land, would call this their kind of ground.” This is what 13th century poet Dante Alighieri wrote about the old days of the Maremma of Tuscany. What was once swampland infested with both vermin and banditry is now considered the coast d’oro of Italy. Say what you will about Benito Mussolini, it was under his fascist government in the 1920s that Tuscany was rebuilt and became a prime vacation spot. Now opulent vineyards cover the landscape surrounding this romantic seaside destination. From Purgatorio evolved Paradiso.

The nose showed black cherries, cinnamon, mint and dark chocolate with a distinct earthy component. On the palate, it was full and velvety with ample weight balanced by zesty acidity. Flavors of rich black cherry, prunes, dark chocolate and tobacco leaf filled out the palate. The finish was long and fresh. This wine truly wowed me as its luxurio... Read More

Not very flavorful. Had it at a Tuscany tasting and it was bland. It might be that I do not like the Tuscany style. It taste like it has been watered down. Dry. Read More

The Birillo is a wonderful Bordeaux-blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot and they work together blissfully. A rustic red color with spicy and earthy aromas combing sweet ripe cherries and smoky wood. Deliciously sweet and sour with a nice balance and moderate to full-bodied. Notes of smoky wood, cherries and spices. Incredibly smoo... Read More

Pine resin, roasted chestnuts and waxy honeycomb...full and rich (a little too much so for my taste) but a nice alternative to Chardonnay! Read More

Great surprise! Tastes like a good California Cabernet. I thunk it must be a super-Tuscan (the grape varieties are not on the label). A great deal of berry flavors, some vanilla, some coffee and toast. Fantastic value! Read More

Waxy and herbal on the nose, this is assertively aromatic if in an earthy, dried floral, roasted chestnut, pine resin and butchers wax kind of way. Rich and rather powerful in the mouth, this is intense yet not terrible complex with chunky dried fruit, apricot and citrus, flavors. This exhibits a rare rusticity for a white wine, which many might... Read More

Great introduction to Gaja wine. Great jammy fruit laid upon a bed of soft tannins from the small amount of sangiovese this wine is blended with. Read More
