Chianti Rufina is a small subzone of Chianti in Tuscany, Italy. There are seven subzones defining the vineyard boundaries within Chianti, and the wines of Rufina show their own unique characteristics due to its microclimate and soil types. It benefits from a long growing season and elevated landscape, which makes for excellent acid balance in the grapes.

Instead of the bold and racy Classicos or Colli Senesis, Chianti Rufina tends to be more subdued, delicate, aromatic and fruit-driven, with ageworthy potential.

  • I Veroni Chianti Rufina 2014

    Snoothrank:

Dark berry and herbal oregano notes are almost grassy and do show some fruit notes of cherry and raspberry. Rich and earthy notes of raspberry, red currant and cherry in the mouth with fresh spice and pleasant tannic structure supporting the fruit. A terroir driven wine with character and style. Read More

  • Castello di Nipozzano Chianti Rufina Riserva 2012

    Snoothrank:

Very much a barnyard nose. On the tongue, typical, to me, lightly red-fruited, but, then, noticeable tartness. Medium bodied. Very drinkable, and, for $14, good QPR. Read More

  • I Veroni Chianti Rufina Riserva 2013

    Snoothrank:

Tart strawberry and cherry notes on the nose with some spice and rose petal aromas. This is deceptively tannic in the mouth, demonstrating puckering structure and high acidity with notes of cranberry and strawberry and a finish that's herbal and earthy with good salinity and minerality. • Fattoria I Veroni Chianti Riserva 2009

    Snoothrank:

Soft red fruit on the nose with a hint of floral notes and some raspberry preserves. This has nice spice on the mouth with milk chocolate strawberry and cherry notes, chewy tannins, dusty earth and an okay smoky finish. Read More

  • Fattoria I Veroni Chianti Riserva 2006

    Snoothrank:

Dense mineral earthiness, plum, black cherry and strawberry on the nose. Chocolate and black olive on the palate, good fresh acidity and dusty fruit notes of cherry and raspberry. This is quite earthy and has a touch of salinity towards the finish. Read More

  • Castello di Nipozzano Chianti Rufina Riserva Tuscany 2010

    Snoothrank:

This popular Frescobaldi Chianti Classico has a beautiful nose of cherry, cedar, mushroom and fruit lollypop; the wine has a smooth, cherry-flan entry and a very balanced flavour and finish. Well made and an excellent bargain - if you can find it - from a great vintage. 89 points. Read More

  • Enjoyed the wine while lying naked in the grass under the bright Tuscan sun. Ah... life.
