Chianti Colli Senesi is the largest, and some say the finest, subzone of Chianti in the Tuscany region of central Italy. Surrounding the hills of the Siena province, part of this zone spills into Chianti Classico, which designates both its original vineyard area as well as what is considered its highest quality fruit source. Colli Senesi also extends to San Gimignano, Montepulciano and Montalcino (the latter two being where the other top Tuscan Sangiovese-based wines, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Brunello di Montalcino are produced).

Chianti Colli Senesi is required to have a minimum 75% Sangiovese, which can be blended with Canaiolo, Colorino, Cabernet Sauvignon and/or Merlot. The white grapes Trebbiano and Malvasia have been banned from Chianti blends since 2006.

Chianti Colli Senesi on Snooth

  • Fontaleoni 'Colli Senesi' Chianti 2012

    Snoothrank:

Reticent on the nose and herbal with aromas of dried graasses, hay and subtley spicy red fruits. Light, fresh and zesty in the mouth, this is laden with bright, clear and slightly sweet cherry fruit. Its a simple wine but round and yet bright in the mouth. Very refreshing and gaining some savory complexity on the backend, this goes down dangerou... Read More

  • Castello di Farnatella Chianti Colli Senesi 2010

    Snoothrank:

This starts on the elegant side with pretty notes of lean red cherry, clove and allspice, and a heart of flinty Earth and brambles. There's a nice little core of richness in the nose as well. The palate has plenty of lean red cherry fruit with dark notes of Earth, underbrush, and dried herbs. Aromatic and well balanced showing fine tannins and go... Read More

  • Falchini Chianti Colli Senesi Titolato Colombaia 2008

    Snoothrank:

The nose is firm with subtle incense, reserved black cherry fruit, a little black pepper, and lightly charred underbrush. The palate has masculine black cherry and black cherry skins, with great structure, subtle Chinese spice and a hint of pepper again.Medium weight and well balanced, it has a pleasantly bitter finish with good grip and lingerin... • Fattoria Casabianca Chianti Colli Senesi Riserva 2005

    Snoothrank:

The color is a bit darker than your traditional Chianti, but somewhat lighter than your typical big bold cabs that have been pouring out of California the last decade or so. The nose is very interesting, with notes of rich, dark fruit, a good bit of licorice and some lovely dried herbs. The taste was a complete divergence from the nose, as you... Read More

  • La Pácina Chianti Colli Senesi 2007

    Snoothrank:

Visited the winery recently and tasted a variety of the wines. These are big Chiantis, more in line with a traditional Brunello (not an elegant wine catering to a WA score, but a wine with character and aging potential, that reflects the age of the vines, and the quality of the soil and winemaking). The 2008 was a standout, tremendous with foo... Read More

  • Vitanza Chianti Colli Senesi 2005

    Snoothrank:

Another hot summer day, and since I just went to the gym I figure I should ... ... wine club, the 2005 Vitanza Chianti Colli Senesi. Now you might be asking what makes this wine different from the typical Chianti, and that's a good question. This wine is produced from grapes grown in the hills outside of Siena, so it tends to be a little mor... Read More
