Chianti Classico is the heart of the Chianti zone in the Tuscany region of Italy. It was awarded the distinguished DOCG status, the “superior” labeling level of Italian wine, in 1996, (Chianti made it to DOC in 1984). The word “classico” also refers to the fact that this area was the original zone where this Sangiovese-based wine was first produced, the “classic” zone.
Fun fact: All bottles of Chianti Classico have a seal depicting a black rooster (gallo nero). The story goes that in the 13th century, Florence and Siena, who had been fighting over the Chianti territory for many, many years, decided to settle their dispute once and for all. They mutually agreed to have horse riders leave their respective towns at dawn, and where the two horses met would be the final boundary, senza scuse. Those shrewd Florentines had a black rooster which they starved for days. The day of the proposed meeting, the hungry rooster crowed much earlier than dawn Read more »

  • Le Corte Chianti Classico 2010

Smokey on the nose with lovely red fruit aromas. This is quite transparent and red fruited on the palate, delivers some really big fruit underpinned with steely mineral notes that lend this fresh yet soft wine a touch of austerity. Classic Chianti. 88-91 Read More

  • Badia a Coltibuono Chianti Classico 2010

A bit musty, chalky and lean on the nose some bright raspberry fruit and dusty framing notes. Clean and fresh in the mouth with great cut not he palate and mineral freshness to the vivid red berry fruit. This is long, juicy and clean, but is simple if in the classic high acid, energetic style. 87pts Read More

Fresh, pure and very fruity on the nose with layers of raspberry and strawberry fruit with hints of toasty oak spice and sundried tomatoes along with a touch of VA. • Felsina Berardenga Chianti Classico 2010

What a lovely nose, quite herbal, spiky, and complex with a fine blend of dried herbs, hot stones, sweet spices, leather, cranberry and some worcestershire sauce all given added lift by a hint of VA. Sweet yet compact in the mouth with finely ripe but classically angular Sangiovese tannins. With air this gains some weight, and loses a bit of cl... Read More

A touch leathery on the nose with a relatively dark fruit profile framed with earth and floral nuance. Dark, compact and edgy in the mouth with spiced black cherry and black raspberry fruit.
