Chianti Classico is the heart of the Chianti zone in the Tuscany region of Italy. It was awarded the distinguished DOCG status, the “superior” labeling level of Italian wine, in 1996, (Chianti made it to DOC in 1984). The word “classico” also refers to the fact that this area was the original zone where this Sangiovese-based wine was first produced, the “classic” zone.

Fun fact: All bottles of Chianti Classico have a seal depicting a black rooster (gallo nero). The story goes that in the 13th century, Florence and Siena, who had been fighting over the Chianti territory for many, many years, decided to settle their dispute once and for all. They mutually agreed to have horse riders leave their respective towns at dawn, and where the two horses met would be the final boundary, senza scuse. Those shrewd Florentines had a black rooster which they starved for days. The day of the proposed meeting, the hungry rooster crowed much earlier than dawn Read more »

Chianti Classico on Snooth

  • "For example, I would never mix white and red wines as that can't serve any purpose. But you might have say, four Cabs each from Rutherford, Oakville, and Howell, or four Chianti/Sangiovese wines each from say, Classico, Ruffino, and Carmignano, or like the tasting I did last week of Ribera del Duero vs Napa."Seeing that this was a Beginner/Intr... • Al - blind tasting is a great way to learn. However, it's better if you know a bit beforehand and have some kind of theme. When I do blind tasting, it's usually about tasting, not food. For example, I would never mix white and red wines as that can't serve any purpose. But you might have say, four Cabs each from Rutherford, Oakville, and Howell,... Read More

  • Chianti Classico Melini Terrarossa 2007

    Snoothrank:

Hands down the best Chianti I've ever had. Bottle says "2007 Terrarossa Chianti Classico Riserva.". Wonderful wine. Slightly fruity nose, very nice finish. Had almost a buttery smooth clean finish to it. Bottle didn't last much more than an hour! Very very nice. Was given it as a gift but have not been able to locate it since. Read More

  • Melini Vigneti la Selvanella Chianti Classico Riserva 2010

    Snoothrank:

Deceptive nomenclature - because it is Melini behind the fancy name - so has some pedigree (established 1705) in the Classic region of Tuscany. The nose is cheerfully cherry (if I may be permitted this alliterative) with some Mediterranean earth and herb; decant, and you will enjoy the bitter chocolate, cherry and youthful finesse of this wine.... • Castello di Fonterutoli Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo 2010

    Snoothrank:

This Chianti Classico Riserva by Marchesi Mazzei is a great find; the nose evokes a bucolic setting with sedge grass, wild herb, cranberry, cherry and (yes) hard, wrought iron! The palate receives an elegant panoply of sweet cherry and almond with a dollop of fruit sugar. This is an astounding value. Has some acid and structure for further ag... Read More
