Chianti Classico is the heart of the Chianti zone in the Tuscany region of Italy. It was awarded the distinguished DOCG status, the “superior” labeling level of Italian wine, in 1996, (Chianti made it to DOC in 1984). The word “classico” also refers to the fact that this area was the original zone where this Sangiovese-based wine was first produced, the “classic” zone.

Fun fact: All bottles of Chianti Classico have a seal depicting a black rooster (gallo nero). The story goes that in the 13th century, Florence and Siena, who had been fighting over the Chianti territory for many, many years, decided to settle their dispute once and for all. They mutually agreed to have horse riders leave their respective towns at dawn, and where the two horses met would be the final boundary, senza scuse. Those shrewd Florentines had a black rooster which they starved for days. The day of the proposed meeting, the hungry rooster crowed much earlier than dawn Read more »

Chianti Classico on Snooth

  • Castello d'Albola Chianti Classico 2012

    Snoothrank:

Purchased at Binny's, 12/2016. This bottle was opened at Power's Italian dinner night. This vintage was not much different than the 2009 I consumed a couple of years ago. For a classico there was just middle of the road talent in this bottle. Read More

  • Ruffino Chianti Classico Riserva Ducale Oro Gran Selezione 2011

    Snoothrank:

Shifting aromas of earth, mushroom and fresh red fruit, red currant and strawberry with good spice and a touch of leather. Good complexity and structure here. Cherry and strawberry fruit on the palate, a touch floral and coming with cinnamon and clove on the mid palate, some more earthy notes of black olive and chocolate on the finish. Read More

Soft red fruits and mineral earth notes on the nose with a touch of violet petal and cranberry. Well developed, sun drenched raspberry and strawberry fruit with plenty of dusty earth, chewy tannins and good balance, finishing clean and light with good length and a touch of spice. Read More
