Chianti Classico is the heart of the Chianti zone in the Tuscany region of Italy. It was awarded the distinguished DOCG status, the “superior” labeling level of Italian wine, in 1996, (Chianti made it to DOC in 1984). The word “classico” also refers to the fact that this area was the original zone where this Sangiovese-based wine was first produced, the “classic” zone.
Fun fact: All bottles of Chianti Classico have a seal depicting a black rooster (gallo nero). The story goes that in the 13th century, Florence and Siena, who had been fighting over the Chianti territory for many, many years, decided to settle their dispute once and for all. They mutually agreed to have horse riders leave their respective towns at dawn, and where the two horses met would be the final boundary, senza scuse. Those shrewd Florentines had a black rooster which they starved for days. The day of the proposed meeting, the hungry rooster crowed much earlier than dawn Read more »

  • Badia a Coltibuono Chianti Classico Riserva 2000

The wine was a beautiful color in the glass - clear ruby to sapphire. I could't get much of the nose. A little light and thin in the mouth. Complex, refined flavors, cherries dominate but the fruit lags behind a bit - after it was open for a couple of hours there was a hint of juniper berry but it was fleeting. It did go well with the pork roast... Read More

  • Querciavalle Chianti Classico Riserva 1999

I was more than pleasantly surprised by this wine. I decanted it for over an hour, and it was a beautiful, brilliant, bright and clear ruby-sapphire when poured. The nose was a little light (my wife wanted to know if she was crazy to say "honey" - I said no - that could come from the oak), but on the palate it was full of ripe fruit - not as pep... Read More

  • Antinori Passignano Riserva 2001

Shocked by the overall Bretty-ness to this wine. Wasn't expecting that at all. However, after much swirling, aerating and sniffing, I was able to find a core of dark red and black fruit. With a positive midpalate of dried herbs and a leathery tannin finish with bitter cherry components. Read More

  • Ruffino Chianti Classico Riserva Ducale 2006
