Carmignano Wine

Carmignano is a red wine from the town of Carmignano, about 15 miles from Florence. Unlike Chianti producers, who have only recently begun to experiment with Cabernet, Carmignano's winemakers have been using it since Cosimo III de'Medici introduced it in the early 1700s. Their wine contains about 20 % "uva franciosa," which adds pleasing underbrush and saddle leather to the berry fruit and floral notes in the bouquet, and also contributes a certain amount of power to the wine. The end result in many ways resembles the Sangiovese-based Supertuscans made over in the Chianti Classico Region, and like them, Carmignano will work nicely with roasted white meats, for example a turkey, or roasted or grilled red meats or game. It also ages nicely, and with time will go well with moderately aged cheese too. – Description from Kphillips

Milk chocolate oak and rich fruit pop on this powerful nose rich with aromas of ink, blue flower and herbs. • Piaggia Carmignano Il Sasso 2007

    Snoothrank:

The nose showed cherry and herbs with undergrowth and a hint of new oak. The palate showed a medium body but with silky elegance and flavors of cherry, pomegranate and dark chocolate with a slight austerity. The finish was long yet fresh with silky tannin. This bottle was feminine yet muscular and should drink even better after being in the cell... Read More

  • Piaggia Carmignano Il Sasso 2006

    Snoothrank:

The 2006 Piaggia, Carmignano, Il Sasso shows a ruby red color in the glass with aromas of black cherry, lavender and herbs, lead pencil and just the right amount of toasty oak. On the palate, I found juicy blackberry with a citrus twinge, followed by cedar on a well-structured frame with balanced acidity. Citrus and sour cherry show on the med... Read More

  • Piaggia Carmignano Il Sasso 2006

    Snoothrank:

Smoky oak and leather on the nose. This offering is remarkably accessible and beautifully balanced with a lingering openness rare for such a young vintage. The opulent taste of dark fruit, smoke, leather and licorice dominate this wonderfully balanced 70% Sangiovese, 20 Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot blend. Indeed, the low yields which compri...
