Carmignano Wine

Carmignano is a red wine from the town of Carmignano, about 15 miles from Florence. Unlike Chianti producers, who have only recently begun to experiment with Cabernet, Carmignano's winemakers have been using it since Cosimo III de'Medici introduced it in the early 1700s. Their wine contains about 20 % "uva franciosa," which adds pleasing underbrush and saddle leather to the berry fruit and floral notes in the bouquet, and also contributes a certain amount of power to the wine. The end result in many ways resembles the Sangiovese-based Supertuscans made over in the Chianti Classico Region, and like them, Carmignano will work nicely with roasted white meats, for example a turkey, or roasted or grilled red meats or game.
