Trentino Wine

Trentino is the southernmost province of the Trentino-Alto Adige region in the north of Italy. With its capital Trento, this is the culturally Italian portion of the region. Alto Adige is to its north, some call it Sudtirol, and is mostly German-speaking, long considered part of Austria, which is now on its northern border.
While not as mountainous as Alto-Adige, the climate and scenery in Trentino is still largely influenced by the Alps, which form a rain shadow over the valley. This creates a warm and dry microclimate, with mountain breezes cooling the vineyards down at night, and various lakes and the Adige river providing irrigation.
Trentino encompasses several DOCs that represent specific varietals and/or styles and their location, some with German equivalent names: Teroldego Rotaliano, Caldero (Kalderer), Casteller and Valdidige (Etschtaler). Teroldego is an indigenous red varietal that produces deep, dark, yet fruity wines. The other three DOCs mentioned Read more »

  • Zeni Teroldego 2012

Smoky and finely mineral and stemmy on the nose, this does show an impressive array of sweet spice and herbs on the nose which pop early on the palate as well. Theres gorgeous fruit here, bright, complex, and high toned, though the palate lacks the complexity of the nose. Everything wraps up in a clean, light finish. 87pts Read More

  • Foradori Granato 2010

Oily and smoky on the nose with lots lots of pipe tobacco and used pipe briar aromas. Rich, seamless, and powerful in the mouth. This shows lots of depth on the palate though some wood tannins do intrude on the midplane. Ultimately one finds more power, less detail here and the wine wraps up with a tough, tannic finish. Theres lots of red frui... Read More

  • Foradori Teroldego Morei 2012

A bit of obvious VA on the nose adds lift and brilliance to the aromas of dried herb, raw nut meats, flowers and a bit of sour berry fruit. Riper tannins here than in the Sgarzon make for a somewhat denser and richer expression of Teroldego with bright wild blackberry, blueberry fruit filling the palate supported by lots of acid and soft tannins... • Foradori Fontanasanta Nosiola 2012

Mineral and spicy on the nose, this shows better precision and more freshness than the Manzoni Bianco. Entering with great power and focus, this fills the mouth with clean gorgeous expressions of white peach and crisp apple laden with mineral notes and subtle hazelnut accents. Finishing with a mouth cleansing and slightly bracing texture, this ... Read More

  • Terlano Muller-Thurgau Alto Adige 2010

The nose reminds me of Riesling but the flavor profile is a bit lighter. Lively acidity and nice subtle citrus make this a wine that would go well with seafood or chicken dishes sans heavy sauce. Overall this is an extremely enjoyable quaff. Read More
