Trentino Wine

Trentino is the southernmost province of the Trentino-Alto Adige region in the north of Italy. With its capital Trento, this is the culturally Italian portion of the region. Alto Adige is to its north, some call it Sudtirol, and is mostly German-speaking, long considered part of Austria, which is now on its northern border.

While not as mountainous as Alto-Adige, the climate and scenery in Trentino is still largely influenced by the Alps, which form a rain shadow over the valley. This creates a warm and dry microclimate, with mountain breezes cooling the vineyards down at night, and various lakes and the Adige river providing irrigation.

Trentino encompasses several DOCs that represent specific varietals and/or styles and their location, some with German equivalent names: Teroldego Rotaliano, Caldero (Kalderer), Casteller and Valdidige (Etschtaler). Teroldego is an indigenous red varietal that produces deep, dark, yet fruity wines. The other three DOCs mentioned Read more »

  • Kris Pinot Grigio 2013

    Snoothrank:

Clean and crisp aromas of green apple, lemon and pear. Quite tart flavors here, holding just enough acidity to keep it fresh and lively in the mouth. Flavors are very citrus driven, with mostly lemon and lime, but there's some honeydew melon notes and a touch of pine nuts as well to round out the flavors. Read More

  • 90 Cellars Lot 42 Pinot Grigio 2012

    Snoothrank:

The 90+ Pinot Grigio is almost transparent in color with just a tinge of white honey. Lovely on the nose with aromas on citrus and calming honeysuckle. This is a happy light wine that surprises as it hits all your tastebuds with a swift pow of melon, pear and tangerine - it's really quite delightful. The finish is smooth and soft. The perfec... • Rotari Blanc de Noir Brut Rose Champagne Blend NV

    Snoothrank:

Saw that this was supposedly 90 pt rated and wanted to try, with a bit of a skeptical lean. Pleasantly surprised at how decent this was at the price point! Read More

  • Colavita Pinot Grigio 2012

    Snoothrank:

Candied lemon notes and aromas of honey dominate the nose along with gentle orange fruit gel notes. This is soft and easy going in the mouth. A subtle nutty note punctuates the rather neutral citrus flavors that are rather flat on the palate with no discernible acidity and a very modest finish. 78pts Read More

  • Alois Lageder 'Riff' Pinot Grigio 2012

    Snoothrank:

Perfumed on the nose with gentle dried floral and apple skin notes along with hints of chestnut and dried lemon peel. Round in the mouth without much detail while delivering polleny orchard fruit flavors. There's enough acid here and some mineral note but this is rather boring if cleanly made. 85pts Read More
