Passito di Pantelleria is a sweet wine produced on the tiny island of Pantelleria off the Sicilian coast in Italy. It is produced from dried Muscat of Alexandria grapes, and has been made there for centuries. Drying grapes is an ancient custom in this part of the world that not only brings out concentrated flavors, but acts as a preservative since the naturally high sugar and alcohol content reduces spoilage. Until the late 19th century, Passito di Pantelleria was rarely seen anywhere off the island, but has since gained popularity, becoming an official DOC in 1971. The wine is an aromatic sweet wine, with flavors of honey, orange and a hint of sweet white flowers.– Description from Amanda Schuster
