  A great wine quite complex. initially pepper on the palate, later dark cherry, very well rounded tanins. Opens up more after 30 minutes. Ready to drink but it will improve for a few more years maybe more.

Read moreI spent my summer vacation in New York City and Cape Cod eating and drinking ... and a bottle of 2006 Cos Cerasuolo di Vittoria “Pithos”.  The Pithos is made in terracotta amphora housed under ground and goes after all the ancient Roman winemaking techniques via the Sicilian grape varieties - Nero d’Avola and Frappato.  The wine jumped out of the bottle immediately with spicy red licorice wrapped in barnyard meat and funk. There was a touch of dried herbs, a la vermouth in the mouth and again a spicy, bitter cherry finish on rather soft tannin and good acid backbone.  The wine, which I haven’t consumed since I lived in Sicily, was quite a treat and a good value considering a bottle of Radikon or Gravner made in similar style will cost you almost double on the retail shelf. So, that is it.  My plane is on descent into San Francisco airport.  And I am happy to be back in California, counting the days until harvest has me knee deep in red and white wine grapes.  T-minus…. Very poor example of nero d'avola expecially coming from such an esteemed vineyard in Sicily. Tasted like bad surgary Frappato. The whole idea of this bottle seems to toss the idea of a proud sicilian grape, nero d'avola, throw it on the ground and piss all over it. It creates such a paradox when you think that the same winery that makes a world class chardonnay also bottles this swil.    (hide)

I’ve tried different cellars and even restaurants in Melbourne, no one has any. Then there’s Vaucluse Cellars in Sydney who seems reluctant about sending me just the one bottle… If anyone knows where I can get a bottle of this Sicilian wine - any vintage, can you please let me know? Just so you can taste another style of Nero d’Avola, we’ll also be pouring a 2006 from Mirabile of Menfi. Next, it wouldn’t be a Sicilian tasting without a passito—in this case, it’s a Passito di Pantelleria-Kammeo from Guicciardini Strozzi. To close the evening, we’ll be tasting one of my favorite after-dinner amaros, Averna of Caltanissetta, and Limoni di Sicilia, a liquore di limoni. Can you handle it? Read more60% Nero d'Avola, 40% Frappato di Vittoria, 13% ABV I was persuaded by my chatty and enthusiastic local Philglas & Swiggot man to buy this unusual Sicilian red wine with a strange fat bottle, not cheap at around £17.00, but which turned out to be an excellent recommendation. I was looking for something Italian, exciting and different. I'm trying to expand my knowledge of the bewildering array of native Italian varieties. You would have thought that being from Sicily, which has a hot, dry climate, that we'd be looking at a wine with high extraction, high alcohol, intense stewed fruit aromas and abrasive tannins, but actually it's more like a Burgundy - soft, light, gorgeously aromatic with a fresh, vivid, minerally finish. This is a very surprising and interesting find. It looks unusual, to start with - the bottle is short and plump - and the label is austere. The ABV is only 13%, which is rare for a Mediterranean wine nowadays. The colour is a light, garnet red, and the wine exudes a gentle perfume of smoked bacon, tobacco and toasty oak, followed by a very balanced, impeccably structured mouthfeel with both savoury and sweet sensations - grilled meats, blackberries - and a very pleasant, impressive, elegant, tightly wound, mineral finish. Tim Atkin recently wrote that Sicily was making great wines - this is definitely proof of that. 92 points.    (hide)
