Vermentino di Sardinia (or di Sardegna) is a DOC wine that encompasses the entirety of the southern Italian island. As the name suggests, it features the white Vermentino grape. The theories behind the origins of this grape are interesting. One suggestion is that it was brought south from Liguria, and thrived better in the warmer conditions. Another is that it comes from Spain, transplanted during one of many historic cultural migrations or political takeovers. It may have French origins, as it has been found to be the same grape as what is called “Rolle” in Provence and Languedoc Rousillon. Vermentino is also a significant grape in Corsica. It might have made the roundabout journey from Spain, to Corsica, to Liguria, then back down to Sardinia.

A beautiful bright straw colour, this 14° Vermentino is this year's favourite at around 10 in Sardinian off-licences. Nowhere near as overpoweringly lemony as some cheaper Vermentinos, we somewhat improbably had this wine with pizza (with an unusual base of cream of artichokes rather than tomato sauce) and it was wonderful.
