Cannonau di Sardegna is a DOC awarded in 1972 covering the Italian island of Sardegna (Sardinia). It is based on the Cannonau varietal, which is the same as French Grenache or Spanish Garnacha.
Cannonau is most often a fresh, jammy red wine that is quite food-friendly and easy to drink. There is a heavier Riserva style that has been aged for a minimum two years, with six months required in barrel.
Aside from red table wines, Cannonau di Sardegna is also produced as a liquoroso (fortified) style with added brandy, These are usually from 17.5 to 20% ABV. These are available in secco (dry) and most often passito (sweet) versions. The passito draws out the rich, chocolatey flavors inherent to the grape, and is an excellent match for chocolate, dark fruit desserts and soft cheeses. It even goes well with peanut butter and jelly.
Cannonau di Sardegna, like many DOCs, has its own specific growing zones, with their own climates and soil characteristics. Wines Read more »
