Salice Salentino is a wine region in the heel of the “boot,” Puglia, Italy. It’s located in the Salento peninsula, between the Adriatic and the Gulf of Taranto of the Ionian Sea. This hot, arid region has seen many landlords over the years, from the Greeks, to Romans, Lombards, Byzantines, Turks, Spanish (Aragonese), Venetians, until finally part of a unified Italy in the 19th century. Throughout all these cultural changes, the Negroamaro grape has been a constant.

The name, originally niuru maro in localese, means “dark and bitter.” The deeply colored, rich wines do have a tinge of bitterness, pleasantly so, like high percent dark chocolate. The DOC allows a small percentage of Malvasia Nera added to soften the tannic properties of the wine. Sometimes these are labeled as Malvasia Nera di Brindisi or Lecce according to their home province, but there is negligible difference between the two. Salice Salentino Riserva is required to age 24 months Read more »

Salice Salentino on Snooth

  • Epicuro Salice Salentino 2009

    Snoothrank:

Extremely red fruit forward, an explosion in your mouth. Oak on the finish which felt fake and not in concert with the fruit. As it remained opened (or as we drank more), it blended better. I want to try this again to get another perspective, but will give it the benefit of the doubt. Read More

  • Had a fun pizza night with the neighbors...we had some good pies, watched some ... also cracked open my first Salice Salentino, thinking it might be a good pizza wine. This '07 Vereto had probably been on the shelf too long however...it had trademark old world freshness, that shone above the diminishing fruit. Just not a wine of much personali... Read More

  • Salice Salentino Albarossa -Palama Palama Apulië 2008

    Snoothrank:

Woody, herbally nose. Medium-bodied on the palate. Not a whole lot of fruit flavor, Some of the wood, herbal, vegetative stuff that I found in the nose. OK wine, but I probably won't be rushing out to get more. US$9.99 at the Wine Club in Santa Ana. Read More

  • In past posts here on the Forum I have confessed that I regularly drink ... me ... me away;  Epicuro 2009 Salice Salentino -- US$4.99 at Trader Joe's.This wine is a blend of Negroamaro (80%) and Malvasia Nera (20%) grapes.  I found it to have a neat combination of berry, cinnamon and earthy flavors with an acid content that begged to accompany... • Epicuro Salice Salentino Riserva 2009

    Snoothrank:

Lovely, dark red plum color. Very noticeably oak on the nose. Lots of flavors all over the place--blackbery, cinnamon, some earthy, mineral thing. A little pckery on the tip of the tongue, but not tannic at all. Nice acid. Should be a good food wine. Pizza tonight. US$4.99 at Trader Joe's. Read More

  • Rivera Aglianico Castel del Monte Riserva Cappellaccio 2005

    Snoothrank:

Its a delight to get to taste a wine that carries you away. Riveras 2005 vintage of the Cappellaccio Riserva Aglianico did just that it made us want to pack up our lives, leave it all behind, and move to Italy.Rivera, the winery that also gave us Il Falcone (one of our other longtime favorites), is owned by the De Corato family whose history in...
