Salice Salentino is a wine region in the heel of the “boot,” Puglia, Italy. It’s located in the Salento peninsula, between the Adriatic and the Gulf of Taranto of the Ionian Sea. This hot, arid region has seen many landlords over the years, from the Greeks, to Romans, Lombards, Byzantines, Turks, Spanish (Aragonese), Venetians, until finally part of a unified Italy in the 19th century. Throughout all these cultural changes, the Negroamaro grape has been a constant.

The name, originally niuru maro in localese, means “dark and bitter.” The deeply colored, rich wines do have a tinge of bitterness, pleasantly so, like high percent dark chocolate. The DOC allows a small percentage of Malvasia Nera added to soften the tannic properties of the wine. Sometimes these are labeled as Malvasia Nera di Brindisi or Lecce according to their home province, but there is negligible difference between the two. Salice Salentino Riserva is required to age 24 months Read more »

  • Leone de Castris Salice Salentino Riserva 2009

    Snoothrank:

Continuing a virtual trip into Puglia ... into better DOC country than usual for this heel of Italy... the wine at hand greets the nose as thickly vinous, medicinal and blackcurrant. The entry is quite smooth with placid tannin but a little extra warmth (alcohol) overlaying the slightly bitter blackcurrant flavours. Flavour lingers long, with... Read More

  • Natalino del Prete Salice Salentino "Torre Nova" 2010

    Snoothrank:

Decidedly funky on the nose and very natural smelling. This shows of an array ... rather bright and juicy for Salice Salentino, with cranberry and sour cherry flavors laced with dried herbs, leather, fennel fronds and a touch of childrens vitamin. The backend gains a nice light, fresh tannic bite and some steely mineral notes. Fairly long on t... Read More

  • Leone de Castris Salice Salentino Rosso Maiana 2008

    Snoothrank:

A somewhat different Italian red blend of Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera. It starts out a little thin and metallic with a hint of licorice. There's a good bit of earthiness on the mid-palate along with dried black plums and raisin. Read More

  • Epicuro Salice Salentino Riserva 2009

    Snoothrank:

A joy for the money. Two obscure grapes from the boot. Give demeaning comments the boot. This unpretentious quaffer offers balance, acid and adequate heft. We are glugging it by the case. Read More

  • Epicuro Salice Salentino 2009

    Snoothrank:

Extremely red fruit forward, an explosion in your mouth. Oak on the finish which felt fake and not in concert with the fruit. As it remained opened (or as we drank more), it blended better. I want to try this again to get another perspective, but will give it the benefit of the doubt. Read More
