for this region?
Salento (Salentu) is located within the Puglia region of Italy, in the southeastern section of the “heel” of the boot. Many of the wines from this region transcend growing zone, blend or aging specifications of their propietary DOCs, and fall under this IGT heading when originating from within Salento. This allows producers more freedom of experimentation.
The Salento peninsula is the southernmost of three viticultural areas within Puglia, the others being Brindisi and Taranto. The dominant red grapes cultivated are Primitivo (genetically the same as California Zinfandel), Negroamaro, and Malvasia Nero. The IGTs are often released as rosso blends, sometimes with international varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, or as single varietals. There are also some excellent Salento rosato wines. Whites (biancos) tend to to be produced from Verdeca, Francavilla and international varietals such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
