Salento (Salentu) is located within the Puglia region of Italy, in the southeastern section of the “heel” of the boot. Many of the wines from this region transcend growing zone, blend or aging specifications of their propietary DOCs, and fall under this IGT heading when originating from within Salento. This allows producers more freedom of experimentation.
The Salento peninsula is the southernmost of three viticultural areas within Puglia, the others being Brindisi and Taranto. The dominant red grapes cultivated are Primitivo (genetically the same as California Zinfandel), Negroamaro, and Malvasia Nero. The IGTs are often released as rosso blends, sometimes with international varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, or as single varietals. There are also some excellent Salento rosato wines. Whites (biancos) tend to to be produced from Verdeca, Francavilla and international varietals such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

  • Castello Monaci Primitivo Salento IGT Piluna 2006

Milky oak on the nose with nice herb and spicy tones lurking in the background though this smells a bit acidic and hard. On entry this is dry, clean and rather tight yet with nicely balanced notes of vanilla and hard blackberry fruit. The wood comes off as a bit raw with drying tannins but the finish is spicy and complex with notes that recall c... Read More

Very disappointed. It tasted strongly of rubber with caramel to me. I tried it after a couple of days, thinking it maybe needed to breathe. No luck. Maybe I got a bad bottle? Read More

  • Trentatre Rosso Cabernet Merlot Montepulciano 2007

Interesting blend: acidic, then turns earthy, and finishes fruity. Light and not very dry. Even more interesting is the price, $5.99 at Trader Joe's. When I pulled this bottle off the shelf another store patron told me it was really good, then I got the same from the clerk at checkout. Considering how delicious this is for the price I'll alw...
