Brindisi is a town and coastal wine region in the Puglia province of Southern Italy. The growing zone encompasses the town of Brindisi and its environs as well as vineyards in the adjacent Mesagne. There is an ancient history of winemaking here as the city has long been a major trade hub and the main port connecting to Italy’s “heel,” thus providing Rome and the East with its wines, salt and olive oil. 

Despite what should be obvious climatic influences from the Adriatic Sea, the region still has that Puglian characteristic of being blazing hot and dry in summer. The DOC wines are red and rosato styles only, based on the Negroamaro grape. These can contain up to 30% Malvasia Nera and/or Montepulciano, with an allowable 10% Sangiovese. The wines tend to be dark and brooding, with ripe fruit flavors and big, but approachable tannins. The rosatos tend to have pale pink or coral color, very zingy and fruity.
