Puglia Wine

Puglia (a.k.a. Apulia) is located in southeast Italy, or as many describe it, the “heel” of the boot. Flanked by the Adriatic and Ionian seas, it’s a spectacularly fertile peninsula, known for growing olives, figs, almonds, wheat and of course, wine grapes. Its Meditterranean climate is hot, with long sunny days cooled off by ocean breezes. The region has been inhabited for many centuries, with wines factoring in throughout. The Greeks, Romans, Goths, Lombards, Byzantines, Turks and Venetians all occupied the province at various stages from several centuries B.C. up until 1861, when it was officially recognized as part of Italy.

Next to wine, olive oil is its biggest industry, accounting for half of Italy’s production. Red wine has come from Puglia in profuse quantities, and garnered the region a reputation for being a terrific source of “plonk” for a long time. Producers enjoyed success for this mass production, and happily churned out oceans Read more »

  • Layer Cake Primitivo 2011

    Snoothrank:

My request for a recommendation at the local liquor store and adding I am a fan of Zin's resulting purchasing. I'm a big fan of "value" wines and this is certainly a great wine for the price. It does have a full body but is not over bearing. Not dry, very fruity and definitely tasty. I do believe that Zin's should have a slight chill and hav... Read More

  • Trentatre Rosso Cabernet Merlot Montepulciano 2007

    Snoothrank:

Interesting blend: acidic, then turns earthy, and finishes fruity. Light and not very dry. Even more interesting is the price, $5.99 at Trader Joe's. • Layer Cake Primitivo 2011

    Snoothrank:

The wine itself is very fruity, more than I usually care for. Not much on tannins either. This is strickly a wine that I will have prior to dinner, certainly not with a fatty meat. At $16 a bottle, it i... Read More
