Puglia Wine

Puglia (a.k.a. Apulia) is located in southeast Italy, or as many describe it, the “heel” of the boot. Flanked by the Adriatic and Ionian seas, it’s a spectacularly fertile peninsula, known for growing olives, figs, almonds, wheat and of course, wine grapes. Its Meditterranean climate is hot, with long sunny days cooled off by ocean breezes. The region has been inhabited for many centuries, with wines factoring in throughout. The Greeks, Romans, Goths, Lombards, Byzantines, Turks and Venetians all occupied the province at various stages from several centuries B.C. up until 1861, when it was officially recognized as part of Italy.

Next to wine, olive oil is its biggest industry, accounting for half of Italy’s production. Red wine has come from Puglia in profuse quantities, and garnered the region a reputation for being a terrific source of “plonk” for a long time. Producers enjoyed success for this mass production, and happily churned out oceans Read more »

  • Layer Cake Primitivo 2011

    Snoothrank:

Layer Cake Primitivo has been one of my favorite wines to open after a hard day at work. I love the cherry and berry aroma. It is very soothing. The wine itself is very fruity, more than I usually care for. Not much on tannins either. This is strickly a wine that I will have prior to dinner, certainly not with a fatty meat. At $16 a bottle, it i... Read More

  • Feudo di San Nicola Negroamaro Puglia IGT 2004

    Snoothrank:

This started out closed on the nose and even gave a vegetal hint of fresh peas but, after an hour, opened in bottle, it started to show aromas of plum, a bit of stewed tomato, animal musk and pepper. This may not sound pleasurable to a fan of big fruity wines, but those in search of nuance and complexity would have a great time unveiling the la... Read More

  • Canaletto Primitivo Puglia IGT Canaletto Primitivo 2002

    Snoothrank:

I stopped into a local wine shop and found this bottle almost hidden amongst the newer vintages. The price point was right (under $10) and the label looked intriguing. I was not familiar with the Primitiva story, so this was purchased on Blind Faith. When I got it home, I immediately uncorked it and let it breath while I did some online resea... Read More

  • Antica Vigna Masseria Biscardo Puglia 2007

    Snoothrank:

Friends in a wine club shared a bottle of this delicious wine a few weeks ago. The first taste hits your tongue so pleasantly you might not want to swallow for awhile. The fruity body is smooth, not sweet, but the flavor explodes in your mouth. The shock and awe are like the discovery of Giotto's Arena Chapal after a lifetime of hearing about Mi... Read More
