Gattinara is a red wine produced in the northwestern Piedmont region of Italy. Like the other big high profile regional reds such as Barolo and Barbaresco, it is based on the Nebbiolo grape. It is believed the name is a derivation of “Catuli Ara,” meaning “altar of Catullus.” This refers to the founding of the town of Gattinara, where proconsul Lutatius Catullus invested his booty after conquering the Cimbrian Gauls in 101 BC. Wine-making in the region dates at least as far back as the Roman era. It received its DOCG (superior classification) in 1990.
The Gattinara zone centers around the historical town, and reaches west to the hills of the Alps. This inland area has a continental microclimate, with hot summers and cool late autumns and winter. The vines grow in iron-rich, volcanic soils that have elements of carbon, magnesium and calcium. These factors all contribute to well-balanced, full ripening grapes.
