  Hermann, Missouri had a wine trail event yesterday, featuring six of the local vineyards, and all of them on the list Rhodies compiled. Read moreHermann, Missouri had a wine trail event yesterday, featuring six of the local vineyards, and all of them on the list Rhodies compiled. The red wines I enjoyed most were blends with some Norton present, but I just haven't cultivated a pure norton taste yet. The Missouri whites just seem to have a more interesting and appealing range of flavors than the reds, particularly in the sweet wines. A couple of the red wines we tried reminded me of a fresh Beaujolais, and a few having some similarities with pinot noir and blends using pinot noir. Overall, Rhodies' scores aren't much different than I would give to these six, maybe a bit generous in the high range. The Missouri River bluff views were spectacular; it was an enjoyable way to spend the afternoon.    (hide)

  Whilst I can certainly understand both columns, I'd say your proposed modification does make the listings clearer and easier to read. For novices, I'd guess this would be helpful. For people with a bit more wine knowledge, it should help too as it looks like it'd make things easier... For people with a bit more wine knowledge, it should help too as it looks like it'd make things easier to read through and find what you're looking for quickly and easily, as it seems just a bit less cluttered. So I'd go with the modified version. If this is a database, I guess using separate fields would probably mean you could start do some more interesting things with search (search by decade or year, search by region or country, etc). But then I should note, databases and I don't always get on that well (cue nightmares about mysql/postgresql). The big question, of course, is how much work it will take to tidy up the data...    (hide)

  I would obtain a list of importers in your area. See if they have anything at the lower end that they are struggling to move on. You should find something quite palatable from Australia, Chile, Argentina & South Africa for around $5 per bottle Only problem would be your labels.....

The more premium ones listed above are the Rockford Black, the Seppelt Show Reserve, E & E, Black Queen, Primo Estate's Joseph, and the Leasingham Classic. The Seppelt Silverband, Anderson, and Majella would fill out the middle ground, and most of the others, I'd regard as more affordable, but not necessarily lesser quality    (hide)

Why don't we find more New York State wine on New York State wine lists and in New York State wine stores?" Im a NY/NJ person, too and I try to get out to Long Island, Hudson valley and Cape May County (NJ) as often as I can. What I've been learning from visiting so often is that it comes down to simple supply and demand. It is so unfortunately that some of the most densely populated region in the country (metro NY), with some of the highest real estate value in the world is finally realizing that it also happens to have excellent wine growing climate and geography. LI and Hudson just does not, and probably never will be able to get the space it needs to produce the volume to sell outside of their direct customer base. Its unfortunate because I think LI is making some great Cab Franc, and Hudson Valley had some fantastic chardonnay, and Rieslings. There are some halfway decent wineries scattered throughout North NJ, but I have taken a few trips down to Cape May county - and they are doing some really interesting things down there. I hope they soon master get some recognition because they certainly have plenty of land to expand if it all works out.    (hide)

Read moreHad a fair batch of sparkling this past Saturday night--four bottles of two different bubblies (one champers and one New World) between three of us together with some simple, light hors d'oevres. All that wine seemed to evaporate before two hours went by. Why is it that champagne seems to go down faster than most other forms of wine? Lots of energy, too, to propel us through the rest of that crazy night. One of the two-bottle batches was a very fine NV Grande Reserve Brut champagne from Pierre Morlet to set the tone. Parched throats were lubricated enough by the end of them so that we very easily quaffed the remaining two bottles, of 2003 Beacon Hill Brut Rosé from Soter Vineyards up in Oregon. Red berries, roses, good minerality and that lovely biscuity flavor and feel we all want in a good sparkling wine. No problems at all in the segue from France to the West Coast. So I'm nominating Soter to the growing list...    (hide)
