Dolcetto d’Alba is one of the several DOCs in Piedmont, Italy based on the Dolcetto grape. The Alba production zone spreads into the hills of Langhe, and covers dozens of communes within Cuneo and into Coazzolo in Asti. Many of these locations also share land within the production zones of Barolo and Barbaresco. It is grown in chalky soils that are a blend of volcanic tufo and sand, which produces mineral-driven, balanced fruit.
Dolcetto d’Alba is often considered the finest of the Dolcettos for their slightly floral, juicy and more delicate, less concentrated characteristics. It must be noted that Dolcetto drinkers often detect a pleasant bitter almond aftertaste, which is particularly present in those from Alba.
Some producers opt for the “barroleggia” style of Dolcetto, which is darker and fuller in flavor, with more alcohol content to optimize its aging potential. Indeed, more robust qualities may develop over time, but medium-bodied Read more »

  • Giuseppe Cortese Dolcetto d'Alba 2013

Nice easy-drinking wine. Not over-the-top with fruit, but there are some red berry hints and even a suggestion of mint. Typical acidity that I usually see in Italian wines. More a food wine than a sipper. Also, a drink now wine. I see no reason to dedicate wine storage space for this one. Read More

  • "what besides cabs and chards have you tried lately"Don't know Vino - since Thanksgiving I've had one Chard and 7 Cabs, which is kind of high on the Cab side but my wife likes those. Had far more Tempranillo, which isn't an unusual grape, as well as more Syrah, Garnacha, Mencia, Nebbiolo and oddly, Mourvedre, and then the odd Harslevelu and Trep... Read More

  • Giacomo Fenocchio Dolcetto d'Alba 2013

Tank sample Pretty if slightly gamy tinged berry fruit greets the nose which is surprisingly savory with gentle violet accents. On entry one finds a bright, high acid example of Dolcetto with surprisingly tough little tannins. Flavors of violets, and that gamy berry fruit of the nose gain a touch of mineral, and a little spice on the backend, al... Read More

  • Oddero Dolcetto d'Alba 2012

Buttery and a bit bubblegummy on the nose, this is very fruity with lots of blueberry fruit and accent notes of ivy and rose petal, along with a touch of reduction. A little sweet on the nose, and then soft, slightly rich, and almost chunky in the mouth. This is a very easy going, laid back style of Dolcetto that is a bit too easy and supple for... Read More

  • Massolino Dolcetto d'Alba 2012

To ensure a softer style they extract the grape seeds after a day and half of fermentation, then again after three days Super spicy, floral, and fruity on the nose with a black spice character hinting at licorice with a huge rush of currant fruit. Round and a bit soft in the mouth, this shows nice depth of fruit in an easy going style that lack... Read More

  • I just opened a bottle of Madonna di Como Dolcetto d'Alba 2000 --it is perfect. Where and when can I find more? Are all dolcetto wines similar? I love the rich taste and the lack of any oak!
