Read moreSince 1972, owners, Milena and Aldo Vaira have been producing Barolo, Barbera d'Alba, Dolcetto d'Alba,on a small-scale on their 40 hectare estate in Vergne, the highest village in the Commune of Barolo. Made in the traditional style, their Coste & Fossati Dolcetto d' Alba is a terrific example of the varietal. With generous fruit and judicious acidity, the wine is wonderfully food friendly but is especially well paired with beef and lamb. A wine worth looking for. Let it breathe for at least 30 minutes prior to serving.    (hide)

While it doesn't quite reach the heights of the best in the other two areas, it can be very good from the right producer. While looking around you can also try some Barbera D'Alba and Dolcetto d'Alba, too, which are quite different but very pleasant when from the right house. All of these are good from someone like Bruno Giacosa.   Yingsum, the ripasso I know involves fermenting on skins left from making Amarone and is used by houses like Quintarelli to make some very superior Valpolicella Superiore. From Wikipedia: "With this technique, the pomace of leftover grape skins and seeds from the fermentation of recioto and Amarone are added to the batch of Valpolicella wines for a period of extended maceration. The additional food source for the remaining fermenting yeasts helps boost the alcohol level and body of the wines while also leeching additional tannins, glycerine and phenolic compounds that contribute to a wine's complexity, flavor and color. As the production of Amarone has increased in the 21st century, so too has the prevalence of ripasso style wines appearing in the wine market with most Amarone producers also producing a ripasso as a type of "second wine"   Just what are you going to be drinking, from what producers? If you know ahead of time, we may be able to provide you with a better headsup about what to look for.   Some general information about how Amarones are made, also from Wikipedia: "Grapes destined for Amarone are the last grapes in Valpolicella to be harvested, getting as ripe as they can before mold and rot set in. The sugars in the grapes are then concentrated by a process of dessication where they are kept in a special drying room for anywhere from three to four months. During this time over a third of the water is removed as the grapes shrivel into raisins. This method (known as passito) produces more concentrated grapes that still maintain the acid balance of a cool-climate grape. Amarone's differ from other late harvest wines in that the presence of botrytis cynerea is actively discouraged as winemakers attempt to avoid the smokey, moldly flavors that come with botyrtized wine." And unlike other late harvest wines they are generally dry, though highly alcoholic, deep and very complex.    (hide)

  Destefanis Dolcetto d'Alba Bricco Galluccio 2006

  A nice light very drinkable wine with a some earthy notes and a very long pleasant light fruity finish. I recommend pairing it with another glass of the same :)

Matthew Fioretti, Sonoma, Ca Peitit Sirah - Bogle 2006, maybe Bogle 2007.   Rosenblum - has more than a dozen, check snooth, heritage clones 2007 might be a good bet, or 2006 or 2005. Afraid to say it, but if you can find Crane Lake Petit Sirah 2005 it is really good after 30 min decanting.  But the $3 might turn you off or offend the gift's receiver.   So buy him/her a case instead.      (hide)
