Piemonte Wine

From Asti Spumante to Barolo, the wines of Piedmont are among Italy’s most prolific and best rated. The region’s pedigree is apparent in its 58 DOC and DOCG zones, and although it is only the sixth largest producer in terms of volume, it has the highest percentage of classified wines in all of Italy. No IGT wine area is identified. Piedmont's gently sloping Langhe hills at the foot of the Alps have been rated among the best in the world for red wine production. This westerly region that borders with Switzerland and France is influenced by the Alps and Apennines (the name Piedmont means "foot of the mountain") and its seasons are very distinctive. Hot, dry summers, cold winters, and temperate springs and autumns are common with occasional fog during harvest time. There is a concentration of vineyards around Alba, by the Tanaro river, and others are located in the hills of Langhe and Monferrato in the south east. Some fine wines are produced in the North at the foot Read more »

    Wine review by martins2002

  • In Piemonte, esp Barolo DOCG, nebbiolo is "only" grown on south facing sites because it is a late ripener and needs the longest growing season.  The rule of thumb is that it's planted in the spots where the snow melts first. so, since we're in the Northern Hemisphere, that means south facing.  As the market for Barolo has taken off, plantings ha... • The idea of a separate thread for the Alto Piemonte is a good one. Would be nice to get into back stories and info about winemaking, and TN comparisons, etc., instead of just a photo of a bottle and that's it. Ideas and info that teaches are all good, too, not just a pretty picture and a buzz!  ;-) Read More

  • Yes, you sure know how to hit the low hanging fruit! I suppose we could do ... do another thread for Alto Piemonte and keep this for lesser appreciated Italian varietals, or those outside what is mentioned above. The thought to include alto piemonte is that they are relative rare birds on here and for most american wino's, though not for you, a... Read More

  • So basically anything outside Toscana and Piemonte is fair game?Alto Piemonte is still Piemonte and still nebbiolo--even if it's called Spanna or something else. Gattinara/Ghemme/Carema/Lesona (all except the last I've posted on here) are just higher-altitude versions of the wine being made in Barolo and Barbaresco, and in several cases aren't e... Read More
