Piemonte Wine

From Asti Spumante to Barolo, the wines of Piedmont are among Italy’s most prolific and best rated. The region’s pedigree is apparent in its 58 DOC and DOCG zones, and although it is only the sixth largest producer in terms of volume, it has the highest percentage of classified wines in all of Italy. No IGT wine area is identified. Piedmont's gently sloping Langhe hills at the foot of the Alps have been rated among the best in the world for red wine production. This westerly region that borders with Switzerland and France is influenced by the Alps and Apennines (the name Piedmont means "foot of the mountain") and its seasons are very distinctive. Hot, dry summers, cold winters, and temperate springs and autumns are common with occasional fog during harvest time. There is a concentration of vineyards around Alba, by the Tanaro river, and others are located in the hills of Langhe and Monferrato in the south east. Some fine wines are produced in the North at the foot Read more »

  • Fontanafreddo Vigna la Villa Paiagallo Barolo 1998

    Snoothrank:

A wine that doesnt smack you in the face with a single dimension. Very tame fruitmuch like raisins without the sweetness. Earthiness that suggests a rustic wine. Still firm tannin but supported by excellent acid. Im glad I have another bottle, and it can wait another decade for me. Read More

  • Martini & Rossi Sparkling Rose Italy NV

    Snoothrank:

Tart and toasted aromas on the nose with strawberry and melon notes. Cooked strawberry notes with lots of sweetness that tastes similar to a red fruit jelly. Read More

  • Fracchia Casorzo Voulet 2012

    Snoothrank:

Malvasia di Carsozo is my favorite wine of all time. It supplanted everything I ever held in high regard. I love the fact it's not high in alcohol content and the taste is SUPERB. The only downside is its availability in social settings. Thankfully, I'm now a home body and have three stores that sell it close by. Read More

  • Tenuta Carretta Barbaresco Cascina Bordino 2010

    Snoothrank:

Highly floral notes with tomato leaf, a fair bit of heat and earthy notes of clay and tar. The fruit comes in more on the palate, with tart cranberry, red currant and cherry notes, loamy earth and dusty clay, with potent acidity and spice coming through the back of the palate and onto the finish. Tannins add a bit of texture here, especially on ... Read More
