Piemonte Wine

From Asti Spumante to Barolo, the wines of Piedmont are among Italy’s most prolific and best rated. The region’s pedigree is apparent in its 58 DOC and DOCG zones, and although it is only the sixth largest producer in terms of volume, it has the highest percentage of classified wines in all of Italy. No IGT wine area is identified. Piedmont's gently sloping Langhe hills at the foot of the Alps have been rated among the best in the world for red wine production. This westerly region that borders with Switzerland and France is influenced by the Alps and Apennines (the name Piedmont means "foot of the mountain") and its seasons are very distinctive. Hot, dry summers, cold winters, and temperate springs and autumns are common with occasional fog during harvest time. There is a concentration of vineyards around Alba, by the Tanaro river, and others are located in the hills of Langhe and Monferrato in the south east. Some fine wines are produced in the North at the foot Read more »

  • Tenuta Carretta Barbaresco Cascina Bordino 2010

A dusty and earthy nose, this wine leads with tomato leaf, cocoa powder, herb, and not much fruit. In the mouth there's strong red fruit, mostly lively cherry and a hint of cranberry, but there's also a fair bit of herb and a hint of a violet floral component, licorice, ripe black cherry and a short goji and cranberry finish. • Ceretto Blange Langhe Arneis 2013

Honeydew melon, cantaloupe and lemon aromas. In the mouth its oily but fresh, showing lemon, melon and herbal notes of lemongrass and chamomile tea. Theres a bit of dissolved CO2 here, lending a fresh zestiness to the palate, which coupled with the acidity makes this a great food wine, especially with creamy foods that would need a counterbalance. • Cambria Katherine's Vineyard Chardonnay 2013

Dried hay and vanilla on the nose with lighter baked apple and french vanilla ice cream. More fruit on the palate than in the nose, with a fair heft from the vanilla, perhaps almost overly so as it feels like it doesn't fit well in the wine, however fans of oakiness might well give it a try. Still, the fruit on the attack is warm peach, apple an... Read More
