Oltrepò Pavese Wine

Oltrepo Pavese, which means “Pavia across the Po,” is a region in Lombardy, in northern Italy. Its proximity along the Po river and the city of Milan has made its wines prime products for trade, with production dating back to ancient times. It is considered the most traditional in terms of production and styles in all of Lombardy, having been ruled for centuries by the French house of Savoy.

The vineyards lie between the provinces of Alessandria, Genoa and Piacenza, with the Apennines as a backdrop. The cool climate region makes it the perfect location for growing Pinot Nero (Noir), which is produced plentifully in rosso, rosato and sparkling wines. This varietal, along with Barbera, Croatina and Uva Rara (Bonarda) are used to produce blends including Sangue di Guida (“Judas’ Blood”). The Oltrepo Pavese Metodo Classico (sometimes called “Champagne Otrepo”) was awarded the superior DOCG classification in 2007. The bianco version (a.k.a. blanc de blancs) is produced with a minimum 85% Pinot Nero, with up to 15% from Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio and/or Chardonnay. The rosato version must be 70% Pinot Nero, with 30% of the other varietals.

But for all the tradition in Oltrepo Pavese, there is some allowance for the modern trend of blending with international grapes. Rossos can include Cabernet Sauvignon with the Pinot Nero, popularly aged in small casks (barriques). Whites can include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, the local Riesling clones Italico and Renano, sometimes with white juice from un-macerated Pinot Nero. ~Amanda Schuster
