Oltrepò Pavese Wine

Oltrepo Pavese, which means “Pavia across the Po,” is a region in Lombardy, in northern Italy. Its proximity along the Po river and the city of Milan has made its wines prime products for trade, with production dating back to ancient times. It is considered the most traditional in terms of production and styles in all of Lombardy, having been ruled for centuries by the French house of Savoy.

The vineyards lie between the provinces of Alessandria, Genoa and Piacenza, with the Apennines as a backdrop. The cool climate region makes it the perfect location for growing Pinot Nero (Noir), which is produced plentifully in rosso, rosato and sparkling wines. This varietal, along with Barbera, Croatina and Uva Rara (Bonarda) are used to produce blends including Sangue di Guida (“Judas’ Blood”). This is an off dry, lightly sparkling wine reputed to be an aphrodisiac, which naturally provoked the local clergy to refer to it as “naughty wine.” (You Read more »

  • Cantina di Casteggio Barbera Oltrepò Pavese 2011

    Snoothrank:

seems to be young - you may see little tiny sparks coming out to the surface first seconds after pouring. In spite of this, wine is very nice, smooth and juicy. Tight taste and aroma. Ripe red apple at the beginning and blackberry at the end with hints of something like black pepper or may be tobacco. Read More

  • Scarani Luigi Oltrepo Pavese Barbera NV

    Snoothrank:

This Lombardy Barbera has a deep red hue and a mid-rim variation. Bold fruity notes of black currants and cherries with a slight hint of spice and low acidity. The time for this wine is now to 2015. Best served chilled to 56 degrees, double decanted and served with a good Italian sausage and meaty sauce over pasta. Read More

  • I have been reading up on this wine [Sangue di Giuda, Oltrepo] that friends of mine had but could not find anywhere locally to purchase, so they asked me, since I was born and raised there. I sould not find it either, but the articles state that this is a good wine, especially considering that it is under $12 [actually $11.99], but it looks like...
