Friuli-Venezia Giulia is located in the northeast corner of Italy, bordering Austria and Slovenia.  The Julian Alps, named for Julius Caesar, preside over the northern landscape, while the south is comprised of villages and towns leading to the Gulf of Trieste. Being as close as it is to the country’s border, it’s historically been a veritable magnet for invasions, by everyone from Attila the Hun to Napoleon. In the 18th century, Charles of Hapsburg opened up Trieste and Fiume as “free trade” ports. But this only served to give Austria access to the Meditterranean and make these trade hubs very prosperous while the rest of the region was steeped in poverty. But after World War II, areas rich in agricultural traditions were able to benefit from the rise in modern industry and the region as a whole rose from its downtrodden past.

Friuli on Snooth

  • Conti Formentini Pinot Grigio Collio 2011

    Snoothrank:

Earthy and umami on the nose with scent of pine nuts and prosciutto fat lurking within the core of rather sweet apple and pear fruit. Theres decent acid here and yet this comes off as a bit shapeless in the mouth. Showing classic pear and stone fruit flavors, this lacks much complexity and while it is rich and pleasant it really doesnt offer muc... Read More

  • Kris Pinot Noir Venezie IGT 2011

    Snoothrank:

Sweet and candied on the nose this reminds me of fruit loops cereal, full of orange, cherry and lime aromas. Soft, round and easy to like this offers up a rather anonymous mouthful of chalky red berry fruit with faint herbal accent notes. For a small scaled wine there are some rather obvious tannins here that quickly take control of the modest f... Read More

  • Conti Formentini Friulano Collio 2011

    Snoothrank:

Finely floral on the nose with a gentle underlay of grassy, herbal tones, a hint of spice and some peach and lemon aromas. Somewhat rich on entry, this quickly gains focus in the mouth as it delivers fairly straightforward flavors of minty toned melon with a touch of a honied quality. Rather large scaled and rich in the mouth, this ends with so... Read More

  • Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio 2011

    Snoothrank:

A pale straw yellow color. Clean, crisp fragrance with intense yet elegant hints of quince, green apples, and refreshing citrus fruits. The palette has fresh, harmonious fruit set off by slight sweetness with a long finish full of delicate, tangy flavor. Read More

  • Italo Cescon Pinot Grigio Veneto IGT 2011

    Snoothrank:

Chrystal clear pale yellow color. Very small nose--some slight frutiness. On the palate the initial sensation is dry and refreshing. Then there is some fuitiness--tart apples come to mind, maybe a tad lemon. Tart and lemon indicate acid, which points to the refreshing experience. Slight metallic bitterness on the finish. US$19.99 at Wine C... Read More

  • Grave del Friuli 2009

    Snoothrank:

An appealing Italian red wine, Merlot only in a rather deep color and charms immediately by its bouquet of ripe red berries, typical Merlot, wooded and properly dosed. Wine has a good taste of fruit and medium-bodied, the tannins have some firmness, while lacking any harshness, it shines. Simply delightful! Read More
