Colli Orientali del Friuli, is the region with the self-explanatory name meaning “Eastern Hills of Friuli,” in the northeast of Italy. Wine-making has existed here since the Roman times, and it has evolved into one of the most prestigious regions in Friuli. These hillside vineyards have their own unique soil composition known as flysch di Cormons, a mixture of limestone, marl and sandstone rich in mineral content. The region is split into three subzones: Ramandolo in the north, Cialla in the middle and Corno di Rosazzo in the south.

The celebrity grape of the region is surprisingly not an indigenous Italian varietal, but good ol’ Sauvignon Blanc, making this the Marlborough, New Zealand of Italy (or maybe the white grape equivalent of Maremma). The style is rich and full-bodied, with an excellent mineral backbone thanks to the soil and weather conditions. Though the other white grapes that shine here are indeed local natives Friulano, Ribolla Gialla and Verduzzo, either as varietal Read more »

  • Bastianich Friulano 2010

    Snoothrank:

$ 14 . Smokey and floral on the nose with hints of brie, dusty minerals and lots of chalk and a touch of green herb. On entry this feels just a touch loose, but it firms up nicely, wrapping a creamy gauze of pear and apricot fruit around a spice of mineral and bitter almond flavors. There's nice weight here, but it remains refreshing, with a ze... Read More

  • Girolamo Dorigo Tazzelenghe Colli Orientali del Friuli Tazzelenghe di Buttrio Ronc di Juri 2007

    Snoothrank:

Dynamic in aromas and flavors, this wine shows cassis, baked cherry pie, smoked game, lilac, earth and minerals. The smell alone is worth the price. Then, the palate unfolds with generous quantities of aggressive tannins and striking acidity. Its a mouthful! You can enjoy this now, but its worth aging through 2015. It should evolve to benefit th... Read More

  • Le Vigne di Zamò Schioppettino Colli Orientali del Friuli 2005

    Snoothrank:

This wine smells like the spice rack. Black peppercorns, coriander and poppy seed mingle together across a broad array of red and black forest fruits. Theres also an alluring musk note. The aggressive tannins are appealingly grippy and seem to be emphasized by the tingling acidity. Though it drinks well now, it can hold through 2016. Read More

  • Perusini Merlot Etichetta Nera 2008

    Snoothrank:

A sapid and elegant red with gentle though framing tannins and mouthwatering acidity. Aromas include peak-of-ripeness red currants, lingonberries and blueberries along with fresh tarragon and lightly roasted coffee beans. This wine exudes energy. Drink now to 2018. Read More
