Campania Wine

The region of Campania with its capital city of Naples is situated along the south western coast of Italy, or the “shin” of the boot. The name is derived from the Latin phrase Campania Felix, meaning fertile land. It’s one of the oldest regions, dating back to the Greeks, who first cultivated locally indigenous grapes somewhere around the 8th century BC. The Etruscans took over around the 6th century BC, then the land was absorbed into the Roman Empire in 4th century BC. It was here that the Romans began cultivating what became the cult wine of the era, Falernum (probably out of Aglianico and Falanghina grapes). The region saw many landlords after that over the centuries from the Visigoths, Lombards, Byzantines, Normans, Spaniards, Austrians and French, before finally becoming part of the Italian unification beginning in the late 19th century.

The wines of Campania were originally intended as food-friendly table wines to be consumed young, which didn’ Read more »

  • Romano Clelia Fiano di Avellino Colli di Lapio 2009

    Snoothrank:

Floral and peachy on the noise this gains complexity with air revealing a light almond milk note and lovely hints of a mineral base note. In the mouth one finds a vibrant, medium bodied white wine that delivers layers of peach, melon and tart apple flavors all wrapped in mineral and almond notes. A really lovely and complex example of Fiano that... Read More

  • Mastroberardino Taurasi Riserva 1977

    Snoothrank:

The nose was amazingly young, vibrant and constantly changing. It opened up with aromas of cherry pip smoke, sweet cream and floral notes. As time passed it started to take on notes of dried coca and classic fruitcake. On the palate, it was silky and refined with intense blackberry fruits, tart plum and minerals. Tart red fruits and blackberry l... Read More

  • Mastroberardino Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio White 2010

    Snoothrank:

First... I'm not a fan of white... my brother sent me this bottle (as well as the red from Italy because I love the red). I also drink all my wine at room temperature. That being said... I really enjoyed the toned down smell of the wine. It's not blasting me as I drink it. Some wines come off as very very strong pear and alchoal. Also, the ... Read More
