Calabria Wine

Calabria is a region located at the southern tip of the “boot” of Italy. This peninsula kicks into the the Ionian and Tyrrhenian seas, with the Strait of Messina separating it from Sicily. This close proximity to the island has made it a destination for numerous civilizations and invaders over the centuries. The ancient Greeks were the first to bring in vines and produce wines there, starting a successful trade source. They called it Enotria, land of wine, before that name came to encompass the rest of the southern territories. From this time on, pretty much any ethnic group settled in Calabria at one point or another or together, including Gypsies. After the late 19th century Phylloxera crisis wiped out many of Calabria’s vineyards, as it did in most of the world, the region took a very long time to recover. It hasn’t been until recently that Calabrian wines have regained recognition in the rest of the world.

  • I too have had the Duca San Felice, but I myself was not a fan. Fell flat for ... ... is by far the easiest Calabrian producer to locate in the states, there are far better to be found.  He did also suggest looking to outside the Ciro DOC which allows more blending (which can tame the somewhat bitter Gaglioppo). Odoardi Savuto DOC and DuCropp... • I've had the Duca San Felice from Librandi, by Ciro.  Good ... it ... ... it there in a flight of Calabrian wines.  I noticed some licorice notes in the wine.  The restaurant is not carrying it now, but I've seen it at my local wine shop here in Oakland.  Alas, that helps you not at all in Canada unless you are planning a trip to the Bay Area... • Hello all!  We have a little place in the southern part of Italy, Vibo Valentia.  Every time I revisit there is something new to find, see and learn.  Last Fall, I left some newly bought wine from our local supermarket near Zambrone.  It cost me around EURO 6.   These two I particularly love so much are made from Gaglioppo grape and the Greco Bi...
